The PS3 Ships 80 Million Consoles

The PS3 Ships 80 Million Consoles

Just before the PS3’s successor, the PS4, hits store shelves, Sony is proud to announce that the PS3 has hit a new milestone. The powerful little console that originally retailed for $599 dollars has shipped over 80 million units. Only 70 million PS3’s had been shipped by the end of last year, meaning Sony managed to sell 10 million PS3s in one year alone. In fact, the PS3 is only about 7 years old, which means that it averaged over 10 million units sold in a year. That’s pretty impressive.

Although this is impressive, the PS3 is still “losing” this generation’s console war. The Xbox 360 reached the 80 million mark in September, so it’s not that far off. The Nintendo Wii on the other hand shipped 100 million units back in June, making it the clear winner. It’s ironic that the Wii U is selling so poorly.

According to Sony, 4,332 software titles, not including downloadable games, have been released for the PS3 since its launch. Unfortunately, the PS4 launch lineup isn’t exactly the most powerful launch line-up in console history, but the PS4 is still the favored console for the next-generation so far. We will see if gamers’ faith in the PS4 continues after the console’s release.
