Last year, Nintendo predicted that it would sell 5.5 Million Wii Us by the end of its fiscal year. Similarly, it predicted a total of 18.5 million 3DS units. However, now it seems to be adjusting those totals, and the new numbers are significantly smaller. Now, Nintendo only expects to ship 4 million Wii Us and 15 million 3DS units. Why is that?
Well, there are a few reasons that can be attributed to these changing numbers. For one, the Yen is weakening, which means that the Japanese economy is weaker. Secondly, Nintendo only shipped 3.06 million Wii U consoles in 2012, less than originally expected (yet still not enough to meet the massive demand here in the U.S.). It’s also worth noting that the Wii U hasn’t released any prominent new games since its launch, providing no new killer apps for people who were unimpressed with the original launch line-up. Even if this year’s new games do cause people to give the Wii U a second look, it is unlikely that they will come out by the end of the fiscal year.
