Nintendo Cuts Projected Earnings, Still Has Hope in Wii U

Nintendo Cuts Projected Earnings, Still Has Hope in Wii U

Nintendo has published an financial forecast for 2016 on its Japanese site, and things aren’t looking quite as optimistic as they once were. This could be due to a number or reasons, but the main causes that have been cited are an appreciating yen leading to an unfavorable foreign exchange rate and poor 3DS sales. The new forecast predicts lower earnings for the 2016 fiscal year than what were achieved the year before.

Nintendo’s 2015 fiscal year brought in $4.87 billion in sales, and Nintendo is planning to see $4.43 billion this year (compared to the originally projected $5.05 billion). This is quite a downgrade, but surprisingly, this hasn’t translated to a poor forecast for the Wii U. Nintendo is still expecting to sell 3.4 million Wii Us, and a hundred thousand Wiis. In fact, software sales for these two platforms saw an increase in the report, and Nintendo expects to sell 27 million game copies for the Wii U (compared to the originally projected 23 million), and 7 million for the Wii (up from 4 million). While these numbers are making headlines, Nintendo certainly doesn’t seem worried. It doesn’t have time to be worried, anyway; not with a myriad of smartphone games and a new home console slated for release in the near future.
