The PSN Store Returns May 24

None

A memo sent from Sony to its developing and publishing partners says that the Playstation Network Store will go back online on May 24. The revival is set to coincide with the first content push of titles originally intended for publication on April 26, with the subsequent upload on May 27 of titles slated for release on May 3. After two final pushes on May 31 and June 3, the PSN Store will be up to date with all content intended for release during the outage. Potential lost revenue, however, may continue to be a problem.

In a post on the Capcom Unity forum, Capcom senior Vice-President Christian Svensson estimates that his company may have lost “hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue.” Capcom is a powerhouse developer and can likely take that kind of hit, but part of the Playstation Store’s appeal is that it allows smaller independent developers to provide their titles without the monumental expenses involved in distributing a physical product. Furthermore, with the release of so much content over such a short span of time, smaller titles, especially those without pervasive advertising campaigns, could run a higher risk of being lost in the fray.
