Video Games Outsell DVDs and Blu-ray

Video Games Outsell DVDs and Blu-ray

None

According to research firm Media Control GfK International, as reported by Videobusiness, video games, for the first time, have surpassed in-home movie sales. The research company released its 2008 review and 2009 predictions concerning the sector, and the results showed that game software sales grew 20% in 2008, to $32 billion, compared to combined DVD/Blu-ray sales, which fell 6%, to $29 billion.

GfK attributes growth in game sales to the broad appeal of the Nintendo Wii. GfK sees this trend continuing in the future, as in-home video sales are becoming more and more irrelevant (due to rentals, digital delivery, piracy, etc.). As such, games will likely represent 57% of home entertainment sales in 2009, up from 53% market share in 2008 and 47% in 2007.
