Wii MotionPlus Was Far Too Expensive for Wii Launch

None

In a revealing interview with Venture Beat, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime noted that the gyroscopic technologies that make 1:1 motion controls possible in Wii MotionPlus was known about since before the Wii’s launch. However, these technologies were far too expensive to be considered for inclusion at the outset.

Nevertheless, it seems as if consumers were initially sold a product that didn’t live up to the billing; people expected the Wii Remote to ship with 1:1 controls.

Here’s the exact quote from the interview:

“Wii MotionPlus is a great example of our approach to new technology. We were aware of that technology (the gryoscopic chips made by Invensense) at the time we designed the original Wii. But the cost would have been too high for the business model. It would have been unacceptable. By waiting about three years, the costs come down substantially and it becomes a viable product.”
