Will Rockstar Continue Making Third Person Games?

With the huge re-release of Grand Theft Auto V (and the inclusion of an awesome first person mode that Rockstar is quite proud of), some fans of the classic third person style are worried they’ll be left out in the cold with future titles.

Fear not, as the studio claims it has no intention of abandoning its roots. In a recent Q&A posted to their official blog , Rockstar addressed this very concern. When asked specifically if they were “…only doing first-person games now,” the team shot this notion down immediately.

“Absolutely not! We are excited by the response to our first effort at a first person experience, but remain committed to third person games and may or may not use first person as a camera option in the future. We do like to, whenever possible, give people options so they can play a game the way they like.” they firmly state.

But the conversation regarding first person didn’t end there. When asked if last-gen owners will ever see a patch that brings the new mode to the previous iteration of the game, Rockstar explained why it’s simply not possible on the old hardware.

“…first person mode is a new feature that is only technically possible for us to add to the game with the expanded memory that the new generation platforms provide. There are thousands of new animations added to the game to facilitate first person mode, which would have been impossible to do on the previous generation of consoles without seriously compromising the game in some other capacity.” the studio says.

So if you do want to enjoy the latest incarnation of GTA in all its HD, first-person glory, you’ll just have to make the switch to the upgraded version. Take it from someone who knows: you won’t regret it one bit.
