One thing that many gamers will probably bemoan is the complete lack of voice chat. The ability to chat with your teammates is something that usually comes standard in games that contain online multiplayer, but this option was completely left out in Quake Wars. Instead, the developers chose to include a communications button which brings up a radial menu that allows you to bark off much needed and common phrases, such as calling for help. This system helps keep the game focused, preventing in-game conversations to drifting off into circuitous subjects like debating the hottest female entertainers, but many will still find its lack to be a curious deficiency.

There are some shortcomings in the game, however. First and foremost, Quake Wars is the latest game to be exclusively online multiplayer. The entire game is based around completing objectives online with others, so if you're the type of gamer that doesn't enjoy risking playing with anonymous jerks online, you don't have many other options with Quake Wars. There is the ability to play single player with bots, but it initially amounts to nearly the same feel. Also, the game is not friendly to newcomers, as there is a steep learning curve for those new to the genre. It takes a while to get acclimated to the stages and especially the strange Strogg weaponry, which no newcomer will instinctively be able to decipher as easily as a trusty human shotgun. Anyone interested in Quake Wars that hasn't tried a similar title before may want to practice a few rounds in the aforementioned bot match before hopping online unless you're a glutton for punishment.

The visuals in Quake Wars are well done, but aren't astonishing. All of the environments look great, but there isn't anything in the visuals that is eye-catching, although some of the lighting effects are incredible and the draw distance is appreciable, especially to those gamers fond of the sniper type weaponry.

Overall, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory is definitely a game that should be recommended to fans of the genre. If you have played and enjoyed an Enemy Territory game before, you should try this newest iteration. If you haven't played Enemy Territory but you're interested in a team based, multiplayer game and are willing to invest the time to learn the game, you'll be glad you picked up this title.

Features:

  • MISSION-BASED COMBAT: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars pits teams against each other on a real battlefield, with military-style objectives (e.g. take out a key defense, destroy a target). As a result, everyone always knows where the action is - no more wandering.
  • DEEP TEAMWORK: With "asymmetrically-designed" classes (10 in total), each team in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars provides a unique gameplay experience. The GDF and Strogg are two distinct armies with different strategies and tactics. Players are specifically rewarded for working as a team to accomplish mission objectives.
  • INDIVIDUAL ROLE-PLAY: Using class-specific capabilities, players can be the linchpin of an entire operation, building a necessary bridge or infiltrating enemy defenses to enable a decisive missile strike. Players protect and revive each other when injured, so they can complete critical tasks for the team.
  • UPGRADEABLE CAPABILITIES AND STATS: Over the course of a multi-mission campaign, players earn experience and promotions, and gain new capabilities to help the team. In addition, stats are globally recorded for players to track their rank and prestige in the Enemy Territory community.
  • BROAD ACCESSIBILITY: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars goes beyond providing basic tips for new players. It also includes several innovations that open the game to a broader audience, including: oSolo Assignment System: Automatically assigns players individual missions, so new entrants always know what they need to do. oSimplified Pilot Controls: With easier controls, air vehicles are not restricted to advanced players. oLevel Playing Field: While players earn promotions and stats every time they play, unlocked capabilities are specific to the campaign. Every player starts the campaign at the same level.
  • MEGATEXTURETM TECHNOLOGY: id Software, known for games using cutting-edge technology, has done it again. The revolutionary Megatexture™ technology allows battlefields to extend to the horizon, with over a square mile of unique terrain at unprecedented detail.

    Rating Description

    4.0

    Graphics
The player and vehicle models are very well detailed, however the environments look dull and functional.

    4.5

    Control
The controls are generally easy to use, however having to edit config files to separately customize land and flight controls is an unnecessary pain.

    4.0

Music / Sound FX / Voice Acting
The sound effects of the game are great, vehicles and weaponry are appropriately and enjoyably load.

    4.5

    Play Value
There's no arguing that the game is fun and enjoyable. The clear and easy to understand mission objectives will allow both veterans and newbs to avoid the all too common "Running around shooting because I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing" situation.

    4.3
