92% Of People Have Games They Own But Don’t Play

GameStop thinks that gamers are being wasteful by holding on to games that they no longer play. According to a study done by the retailer and used game seller, 92% of gamers have games lying around their house that they just don’t play. Apparently, by Gamestops standards, most gamers can get two hundred dollars or more (of store credit, of course) simply by trading in the games that they will never play again.

The survey was and conducted by Gamestop research partner Survata. A total of 400 responders ages 25 to 54 responded to the online survey. The results have a 4.79 percent margin of error.

“One-third of those surveyed (33 percent) said they have between five and nine unused games lying around the house, while 38 percent said they have as many as 10 to 20 unused games,” the survey results said. The most common cause of keeping games was inertia, simply not finding it worth your while to gather up these games and bring them to a store. The next common cause for not trading in was having money, so there was no particular reason to.

Trade-ins are an interesting way to get value for your games, but do remember that video games increase in value over time. Games like Earthbound for the SNES go for very large sums of money on eBay these days, and the same may be true of modern games in your collection. You’ll make way more than $200 if you just hold onto them.
