Dance Dance Revolution by Konami has gotten attention for it’s potential to reduce obesity in children, but a recent study by the Appalachian Educational Laboratory in Charleston, West Virginia has discovered that playing the game may also lead to improved reading comprehension among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The study by Tammy McGraw involved sixty-two sixth-graders with ADHD. After three months, the students who played DDR had enhanced focus and attention. The more they played, the more difference it seemed to make. McGraw believes the game strengthens parts of the brain that control memory. The research is still in its beginning stages, but she believes that if the game is found truly effective, it may decrease the amount of medication that is prescribed for ADHD children.
