Age Of Conan Breaks Its Bonds

Age Of Conan Breaks Its Bonds

None

Funcom’s hyper-violent love letter to Robert E. Howard is aiming to expand its audience. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures shall henceforth be known as Age of Conan: Unchained. Chief among the title’s changes is a new free-to-play structure.

In this format, free players have access to only a few of the game’s classes. They are limited to two character slots and don’t receive the title’s unique “offline questing” opportunities. These night-time quests fleshed out a character’s individual story and, as one of the game’s major draws, it’s a shame to see it fall behind the pay-wall.

Age of Conan: Unchained also integrates an item shop into the experience, offering a 10% discount to subscribers.

This is not the first of its MMOs Funcom has taken free-to-play, with Anarchy Online taking that plunge way back in 2004. While it’s disappointing that non-subscribers will have so much of the game’s compelling content sealed off from them, this retooling does establish Age of Conan as perhaps the most violent MMO in the free-to-play space.
