Allied Star Police Designed By Nine-Year-Old Leukemia Patient

If you haven’t burst into tears by the end of this article, then you’re simply not human.

PopCap Games, the Seattle-based developer behind Plants vs. Zombies and the Bejeweled series, recently released a title developed by nine-year-old Owain Weinert. How does a nine-year-old become a video game designer, you ask? Well, Owain was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. He, like most nine-year-olds, enjoyed the company of video games and had dreams of becoming a developer.

The Make a Wish foundation got wind of Owain’s condition, and put him in contact with PopCap Games who decided to make his wish come true. “The minute he walked in the door he handed us a fully realized game design, figured out to the last detail,” said PopCap’s Matthew Lee Johnston. “He stuck with that vision, and directed the team through the development process like a pro.”

The result of Owain’s hard work is Allied Star Police, a “side-scrolling shooter of galactic proportions.” It was developed for iOS and is available on the iTunes store. So wipe those tears from your eyes and go grab it. Unless you’re a robot.
