Atari Tries To Shut Down Retro Gaming Websites

None

Atari is turning out to be kind of a prickly group of curmudgeons. Over the last several months, they have launched a campaign that targets large parts of their retro fan base. Their most recent attack was aimed at Andrew Davie, the owner of atari2600.org.

Davie has owned the domain for the past eleven years, and has used it to show off his non-commercial programming undertakings for the 2600 console. Atari’s representatives are demanding that Davie hand over atari2600.org because it contains a registered brand name. Andrew is purportedly, and understandably, “disappointed” by the way Atari is handling the situation.

Unfortunately, this behavior is becoming more and more common for the retro Atari community. Recently, they sent a similar letter to Starsoft Berlin, a hobbyist who spent his free time programming demos for Atari’s 8-bit platforms.

Obviously there are hundreds of Atari-centric websites on the Internet, but lets hope that the developer has a change of heart before they alienate their entire retro fan base. Honestly, this move doesn’t even make sense from Atari’s perspective. It’s not like Andrew Davie is slowing down the sales of Dig Dug.
