Atari wasn’t happy that Alone in the Dark was being illegally downloaded on RapidShare. Of course, a lawsuit ensued. Atari initially won the lawsuit, which was tried in Düsseldorf, Germany, but RapidShare was able to have this decision overturned by the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf. It was decided that RapidShare follows all the necessary legal guidelines, which require them to block any illegal downloads of protected material that are reported. RapidShare claims, “The Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf acknowledged RapidShare’s efforts against the distribution of material that is protected by copyright and deemed the additional measures required by Atari to be unreasonable or pointless.”  As companies that deal with intellectual property grow more relentless in their efforts against internet piracy, I’m sure we can expect to see quite a few more cases like this. |
