Back to the Future Part III Cheats & Cheat Codes for Sega Genesis and More

Back to the Future Part III is a 1991 action game developed by Probe Software and published by Image Works. The game, based on the 1990 movie of the same name, was released for a variety of platforms including Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Sega Genesis, Master System, and ZX Spectrum.

Despite the game being limited in scale when compared to the movie, it went on to receive strong reviews from critics. Its focus on including fun mini-games meant it was a more coherent experience than other movie tie-in games of the time.

Back to the Future Part III isn’t exactly a fully-fledged adaptation of the film, but that’s not a bad thing. The game is well aware of its technological limitations, and works within them to create a game still worth playing.

Instead of telling the entire story of the film as seen on screen, it puts you in the shoes of Doc Brown and Marty McFly in various mini-games that portray several moments from the film. For example, you can play as Doc Brown as he desperately tries to stop Clara Clayton from riding her buckboard over a cliff edge. Marty gets a few minigames of his own, too!

While it isn’t quite the same as watching the movie, the games are interesting enough to make Back to the Future Part III a worthy title on its own. When you compare it to some movie adaptations that we’ve seen over the past few decades, it’s practically a masterpiece.

Because Back to the Future Part III is so stripped back from the movie, the game only focuses on a couple of moments. As a result of this, we only get to see a few characters featured in the film, with focus obviously given to the two main protagonists of the series, Doc Brown and Marty McFly:

  • Doc Brown: Doc Brown finds himself stuck in 1885, and his old friend Marty must use the DeLorean to come back and save him. In this game, Doc is mainly featured during the Rescue Clara mission.
  • Marty McFly: After traveling back in time to save Doc Brown, Marty finds himself involved in Western hijinks. He is the playable character in the Target Shoot, Marty vs. Buford’s Men, and The Train missions.
  • Clara Clayton: Clara has a bigger role in the film version of Back to the Future Part III, but she’s still present here. She plays the role of damsel in distress in the Rescue Clara mission.

Back to the Future remains one of the most popular film series ever, despite having no new entries in over three decades. The adventures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly and embedded into pop culture, and over the years, plenty of developers have tried their hand at replicating the magic in the video game medium. However, many of the earlier attempts fell flat, as the technology wasn’t quite there to do the story justice.

It wasn’t until the episodic adventure title Back to the Future: The Game was released between 2010 and 2010 by Telltale Games that we got a title that truly captured the scale and sense of adventure of the movies.
