The Goonies II is a 1987 platform adventure game developed and published by Konami. The game is a sequel to the 1986 adaptation of the original movie, with The Goonies II not actually existing as a film. It was released as an exclusive for the NES.
The design of The Goonies II took heavy inspiration from similar titles of the era such as Castlevania II: Simon’s Revenge, resulting in a strong critical reception for the game. Unfortunately, a lack of public sales figures for the game means that it isn’t clear whether the strong reviews translated into financial success.
The Goonies II Premise
The gameplay sections of The Goonies II are separated into two parts. There are the platformer sections, which resemble a Castlevania title, and the first-person sections. The platformer elements make up the majority of the gameplay, with players exploring a non-linear map that allows them to go back and revisit previous sections. Exploration is done via ladders and doors, each of which leads to brand-new areas for Mikey to explore. These areas feature new enemies to defeat, ensuring every level is a unique experience. Every so often, the Fratellis (the antagonists of the game), will appear to chase Mikey, resulting in frantic gameplay.
After each level, the game enters the first-person perspective. These areas take inspiration from classic adventure games, allowing you to search through the rooms looking for hidden items. You can then use a lot of these items in the platformer sections. The first-person levels are also used as a way for you to find the other Goonies, advancing the plot in a big way. You can also find the Goonies via the Magic Locator Device, which can be picked up throughout gameplay. However, this is more relevant to the third-person gameplay.
The Goonies II offers a wide variety of weapons and abilities for you to use in combat. Mikey’s weapons include a yo-yo, a slingshot, and a boomerang. Each offers various ranges and power, giving you plenty of different ways to approach each different combat scenario. This doesn’t even touch on the Molotov cocktails and bombs, among other powerful weapons. There are even some underwater sections throughout the game, which add in a harpoon gun.
The Goonies II Main Characters
Rather than retreading old ground, The Goonies II tells a brand-new story in that universe. The game follows on from the plot of the original movie, with all of the Goonies barring Mikey being captured by the Fratellis.
Here’s everything you need to know about all of the main characters in The Goonies II:
- Mikey: Mikey is the protagonist of The Goonies II. After the Fratellis have kidnapped his friends, Mikey must head out on an adventure to save them.
- Annie: Annie is an original character who never appeared in the original movie. She is a mermaid who, like the Goonies, has been captured by the Fratellis. Mikey is only able to find Annie after he has rescued the rest of his friends.
- The Goonies: The other six Goonies appear one by one throughout the game, with Mikey saving them individually after they were captured by the Fratellis.
- The Fratellis: The Fratellis have broken out of jail, and enact revenge on Mikey by kidnapping his friends. Over the course of the game, the Fratellis can appear to chase Mikey through the levels.
The Goonies II Titles in the Series
During the 1980s, video game adaptations for movies were a dime a dozen. That’s where the original game in the series came from, as an adaptation of the hit movie, now a cult classic. Such was its popularity, a sequel game was produced despite no second movie ever existing.
That is where the history of Goonies games ends, though. The movie is now a cult classic but isn’t particularly relevant in this day and age. Because of this, no studio has felt it worth the effort to produce a new title based on The Goonies.
We don’t expect this to change either, barring any huge reboot of the film that the games are based on. It’s a franchise that right now, feels past its expiry date, and it’ll take something significant to change that.
