Building off of EA Sports UFC 3, the game introduces improved mechanics, new fighters, and a redesigned career mode. Players create and train their fighter to become the G.O.A.T. Winning the championship belt in their respective weight division is no easy task. The game has received generally positive reviews, even topping the sales chart in the United Kingdom. The game has especially received positive criticism for its new and improved submission system and its well-designed career mode.

EA Sports UFC 4 is praised for its well-designed submission mechanics.

In career mode, players craft and design their fighters from scratch. Training and sparring take place to teach the mechanics and gameplay to the player. When a fighter is equipped with the skills of martial arts, they are ready to accept or decline a fight from the more than 200 fighters available. Players box, grapple, kick, and submit their way to the top of their division for the coveted championship belt, basking in the glory and fame they receive. However, the fight isn’t over that this point just yet. Players must defend their belt from new rivals who have been training long and hard to dethrone the player.

Fundamentally, there are two types of submissions. There is the choke submission and there is the joint submission. There are many varieties of these two submissions, however. Choke submissions restrict the airway of an opponent, while a joint submission targets the movement of a joint.
