Battlefield 3: The Misguided Ban-Hammer And You

Battlefield 3: The Misguided Ban-Hammer And You

None

Some people hate any sort of external regulation on the software they’ve purchased. Others just want to watch the world burn. Whichever it is in this case, a junior member at hacking site Artificial Aiming has gone on a crusade against the Punkbuster service used for, among other online titles, Battlefield 3.

He’s found a way to “frame” non-hacking players, such that the Punkbuster service won’t allow them to join any servers on which it is active. This is the vast majority, if not the entirety, of ranked servers for the title.

Since word came out about the hacks, the game’s forums have been set aflame with complaints from affected individuals, which EA has recognized. Official word is that there’s a permanent solution in the works, but affected players are currently asked to get their shooting fix on non-Punkbuster servers, which are readily available. There’s even a filter specifically for browsing non-Punkbuster servers.

The truly unfortunate aspect of the entire situation is that the individual(s) behind this sort of behavior, in inconveniencing their fellow players, feel that they’re engaging in some sort of vigilante justice, striking back at the major corporations that want to “control” their media. This sort of self-centered, delusional behavior instead only demonstrates a lack of maturity and has the opposite of its intended effect, providing a reason for corporations to introduce further means of control.
