Capcom Explains Character Absences In UMvC3

None

In a recent video chat, Christian Svensson of Capcom decided to directly address the fans’ complaints about Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 character choice, hopefully to quell some of the rabid gamer rage out there.

First, he talked about the Marvel characters. Marvel pretty much had the final say on who got into the roster, and while Capcom could make suggestions and tell Marvel that certain characters were important due to tradition, they couldn’t get every character that fans wanted in. For example, Cyclops and Venom were never even considerations, since Marvel did not allow Capcom to put either in the game.

Then, there is the matter of Capcom characters. In this capacity, character choice was largely based on popularity, and this is why you are seeing characters like Strider, Frank West, Phoenix Wright, and Vergil in the game. As far as Nemesis and Firebrand go (specifically Firebrand, as Svensson only talked about characters that have been officially revealed) there is also a desire to create unique characters that play differently from any other. Firebrand is one of those characters. Supposedly Gene from God Hand and Mega Man were in the final pool of characters to choose from, but they just weren’t popular enough to make the cut.

Oh, and one final note. People are asking why there aren’t more black characters or female characters in UMVC3. First of all, the proportion of black and female characters to other characters in the Capcom and Marvel line-up—or in videogames in general—is already low. Adding to that, Svensson said having a balance of race or sex was never a part of the discussion when choosing the roster.
