Civilization V may have done more to rework the series’ core gameplay than any numbered entry in its span to date. Changing over from the traditional square tiles of games past to a hex grid, Civilization V expanded players’ strategic options. Having more than four sides to attack from, or into which to expand, can do that to a game. It also, though, took some things out. Classic series tropes, in fact, such as religion. That’s returning in its upcoming expansion, Gods & Kings, which will also reintroduce espionage to the action, along with new civilizations, leaders, units and technologies. It will not, apparently, include titanic duels between mythological entities, as the title may imply (something for the future? Come on, Firaxis!).
