Consumer Game Spending down for 2010

Consumer Game Spending down for 2010

None

Looks like the game industry, like many others, took a hit this year with overall consumer spending down 2%, according to figures released by market research firm Newzoo. The industry overall took in 24.7 billion dollars over the past year, with console-based games taking 43% of the market share, and casual game portals coming in at a distant second with 15% of the market.

Though overall spending was down, there were some gains in key areas of consumer spending, including a massive 66% increase in social networking game spending and a 46% increase in mobile spending, while console spending was down 29%. This shift in the type of games being purchased is certainly an interesting change, and with companies like EA and Square Enix making games specifically for mobile and Facebook platforms, it is likely we will see even more gains in these areas in the coming years.
