Dark Souls Devs Punish Early Players

Dark Souls Devs Punish Early Players

None

Dark Souls isn’t officially out in Japan until September 22, but some retailers have started selling the title early. From Software is not happy about this turn of events and has decided to, rather than go through Sony and Microsoft to attack players’ accounts, take matters into their own hands using the game’s unique online mechanics.

Those Japanese gamers who pop into the already-difficult action-RPG before its official release will find themselves faced with a powerful Black Phantom, level 145 (the maximum in the game) with all of its stats boosted to 99. For reference, one reviewer, with 60 hours in the game, has provided his own stats: level 43, no ability higher than 30.

An encounter with this phantom doubtless spells instant doom for any unscrupulous player who hoped to adventure in the world of Dark Souls ahead of schedule, but when the game officially releases tomorrow, the insurmountable devs will (hopefully) back off and allow players to get themselves killed on their own merits. Or lack thereof.
