DC Universe Online Explodes, Servers Implode

None

It’s the gift and the curse of making an MMO around a popular, existing property and turning it free-to-play. Yes, now everyone who had even a passing interest in running around as a superhero in the DC Universe is going to download the game, make at least one character, and play through the tutorial. I know I was one of the 120,000 who subscribed over the first 48 hours after DC Universe Online went free-to-play. That said, as prepared as they thought they were, the sudden influx of interest caused hitherto unprecedented crashes for the game’s servers.

Developers have been popping into the official forums for the game, assuaging fans with promises that the kinks will be worked out as soon as they possibly can. Currently, it appears that they’re in the diagnosis stage, figuring out exactly what about the sheer number of players involved is causing the error. If a newly free-to-play MMO is going to have a problem, though, being brought down by too much interest is the right one to have.
