Sony’s Free to Play Business is Booming

Sony’s Free to Play Business is Booming

Free to play games are here to stay guys. There is no avoiding it. Sony announced at a GDC presentation today that their few Free to Play model games are really working out for them. Free to play rvenues are up 50 percent year over year, though Sony did not give us actual figures.

There are only a few titles on the Sony free-to-play market these days. Warframe is one of the biggest, launching as one of the key highlighted titles for the PlayStation 4. DC Universe Online was a huge title for the PlayStation 3, one of the biggest MMOs available on the platform. Other free-to-play titles include Blacklight: Retribution, Planetside 2, and EverQuest Next.

Sony seems to be acutely aware of the problems free-to-play games can cause both gamers and businesses. Specifically, they are aware that microtransactions can be incredibly problematic. While the idea of nickel and diming a user out of all of his money can be appealing for shareholders, a poorly implemented microtranscation format is an easy way to make a game fail.

What games do you want to see go free-to-play? Let us know in the comments.
