Sony Says No To Region-Locking Vita?

Sony Says No To Region-Locking Vita?

None

While it is not a hard confirmation, Sony Worldwide Studios Europe vice president Michael Denny says that, as far as he is aware, the PlayStation Vita will be region-free. This would follow in the footsteps of Sony Computer Entertainment’s most recent hardware efforts, both the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 playing games region free from launch.

The PlayStation Vita uses flash media carts for game storage and, in a throwback to the cartridges of yore and perhaps a nod to the success of Nintendo’s DS platform, will allow users to save data directly to the flash cart itself. Interestingly, this is the first Sony system that allows gamers to save without having to have either internal memory or a memory card for their system. The statement from Michael Denny implies that these flash carts may also be devoid of the region locking so common on home consoles and recently instituted by Nintendo for its 3DS platform, much to the chagrin of importers everywhere.
