While we are still recovering from the PSN outage, a serious problem with the online pass system has reared its ugly head. Simply put, online play for any game that requires an online pass is totally shut down whenever a console’s store is down.

Mortal Kombat was the first game to be affected by this problem. Since it released only shortly before the PSN went down, gamers really didn’t get a chance to enter their online passes. DiRT 3 recently released as well, and it’s also facing the same problem. Even though the PSN is back up, the PS Store is not, so no one can redeem their codes for online gameplay.

Unlike Mortal Kombat, which temporarily dropped its online pass system so PS3 users could experience the game online, the development team over at Codemasters said the online pass system is hardcoded into DiRT 3. “Changing this would require considerable development time and a patch which would need to go through the submission process,” the company said in a statement. “This in itself would be a longer process that waiting for Sony to bring the PSN Store back online.”
