SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a 2019 turn-based RPG developed by Image & Form, and published by Thunderful Publishing. The game was originally released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, although it wasn’t long before it made its way to PC, too.

As the fifth game in the SteamWorld franchise, it received solid reviews from critics. It currently holds an 81 on Metacritic, which leaves it on the lower side of critical reception to previous releases in the series. Still, an 81 is nothing to scoff at.

The gameplay in SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is extremely simplistic, yet charming and fun to play. It is played from a side-scrolling perspective, and you must move from one small room to another, looting each carefully while battling robots in turn-based combat. The game has a unique steampunk aesthetic that sets it apart from other similar games, too.

Combat is fought via the use of Punch Cards, which you collect through looting and completing certain objectives over the course of the game. Punch Cards are part of your deck, which you can manage outside of combat to ensure you’ve got the best build possible.

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech also features a story, with characters Armilly and Copernica setting out into the world on a grand adventure. It’s the sort of thing you’ve seen in any RPG before, but there’s no doubt that it’s enhanced by the game’s strong aesthetic and setting.

One of SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech‘s stronger features is the ability to choose between a few different protagonists. The game initially begins with just Armilly and Copernica, and it seems as though it’s going to be an adventure between just the two of them. However, throughout the game’s narrative, you’ll rescue three more characters that you can add to your party instead. Each has their own unique Punch Cards, which we’ll get into soon enough.

The SteamWorld series began life on the Nintendo DSi back in 2010 as a tower defense game. However, in the years since, the franchise has become more ambitious in scope, using the power of modern hardware to give SteamWorld its unique aesthetic.

Although there are usually several years between each iteration in the series, its fans are extremely dedicated, and stick around to make each game successful. Considering SteamWorld Build has only recently been released, it’s safe to say the series is going nowhere any time soon.

Unfortunately, there are no cheat codes for SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech. For some reason, they were never officially supported by the developer, and there aren’t even any trustworthy mods on PC that you can use instead. Trust us, we’ve looked.

Instead, we can give you a guide to one of the game’s biggest features: Punch Cards. You see, Punch Cards are at the heart of SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech‘s gameplay. They give you different abilities to use during combat, but you can only use a few at a time. However, you don’t just get all of them from the off.
