Wurmple Evolution Guide: Stats, Moves, Type, And Location

Wurmple Evolution Guide: Stats, Moves, Type, And Location

Everyone loves a Bug-type Pokemon. Well, not everyone, but everyone who’s played a Pokemon game is aware of them. They are among the first triple-evolutions players encounter in the game series. They aren’t always effective, especially in their early forms. Still, just as with caterpillars in real life, they eventually bloom into something special.

The original three evolution Bug-types were Caterpie and Weedle. They both start as a little ineffective worm or caterpillar, then turn into nearly motionless cocoons before emerging as impressive Pokemon. This final form is worth the wait as it is a dual-type with the capacity to play a solid role on a Player’s team. In Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, the third major triple evolution Bug-type debuted and broke the mold.

First Appearance

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire debuted in 2002 from developer Game Freak and publisher Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. They serve as the first games in the third generation of the Pokemon franchise after Gold, Silver, and Crystal. While many Pokemon from the first two generations are present in this outing, there’s also a new set of Pokemon to meet, catch, and evolve. One of these new Pokemon standouts is the triple-evolving Wurmple, the worm Pokemon.

Wurmple

Just as with its Bug-type predecessors, it starts as a somewhat small caterpillar-like Pokemon about 1 foot tall and weighing in at just under 8 pounds. Its name points to it being a worm, but it has a mostly red body with spines that run down its back and head and five pairs of little legs on the underside of its body. These features, combined with its ability to spit silk from its mouth and shoot poison from its spines, make it seem more like a caterpillar. Like a caterpillar or worm, Wurmple is near the bottom of the food chain, with fellow Pokemon Taillow, Swellow, and Starly being natural predators.

Wumuple stands out because, unlike its predecessors, it can evolve into two different Pokemon for its second and third evolutions. An even more interesting fact is that which of the two Pokemon it turns into seems random. After turning into an almost identical-looking Cascoon or Silcoon, Wurmple can finally become the very different Dustox or Beautifly. Wurmple’s randomness adds more playtime to earn both sets of evolutions and a gambling feature to the game. It’s popularity has continued as it is a regular in many Pokemon games since.

Wurmple Ruby and Saphhire Pokedex Entries

“Using the spikes on its rear end, Wurmple peels the bark off trees and feeds on the sap that oozes out. This Pokemon’s feet are tipped with suction pads that allow it to cling to glass without slipping.” – Pokemon Ruby

“Wurmple is targeted by Swellow as prey. This Pokemon will try to resist by pointing the spikes on its rear at the attacking predator. It will weaken the foe by leaking poison from the spikes.” – Pokemon Sapphire

Wurmple Type

Wurmple Pokedex entry

Wurmple is a straight Bug-type Pokemon. This single type does have its advantages despite a few disadvantages.

Wurmuple reacts normally to the following Pokemon types:

  • Normal
  • Ground
  • Ghost
  • Steel
  • Water
  • Electric
  • Ice
  • Dragon
  • Dark
  • Psychic
  • Fairy
  • Poison
  • Bug

Wurmple is weak ( 2 times the damage) against the following Pokemon types:

  • Flying
  • Rock
  • Fire

Wurmumple is resistant ( ½ the damage) against the following Pokemon types:

  • Fighting
  • Ground
  • Grass

Wurmple Stats

Wurmple starts pretty weakly, but it is strong enough to at least get by with the proper Training. Its stats are very similar to Caterpie and Weedle, and the three are equally matched in overall strength at this point in their evolution.

Base Stats

  • HP:45
  • Attack:45
  • Defense:35
  • Special Attack:20
  • Special Defense:30
  • Speed:20
  • Stats Total:195

Wurmple Moves

Wurmple has the special Ability, Shield Dust. This Ability prevents added effects of damaging attacks from affecting Wurmple, such as freezing or flinching. Wurmple also has the Hidden Ability, Run Away, which allows it to escape from battle easily. These moves help to protect this weaker Pokemon while it does what it can with its early moves. While Wurmple can’t be taught any moves through TMs, it does learn a few through leveling.

Wurmple Location

A standard Bug-type, Wurmple, can be found in the wild, usually walking around in grassy areas and woods.

All locations where Wurmple can be found in Ruby and Sapphire:

  • Routes 101
  • Route 102
  • Route 104
  • Petalburg Woods

Wurmple Evolutions

Wurmple turns into Silcoon or Cascoon at level 7. While it’s an evolution that progresses the Pokemon, it doesn’t make it any more effective. The player can’t influence which of these Pokemon the Wurmple evolves into, and there’s no way to tell until it happens. Unfortunately, this may require some trial and error to get both.

Silcoon

Cascoon Pokedex entry

Silcoon is the cocoon Pokemon. It looks like a round white husk with sharp spikes all around it. It has glaring red eyes that seem to peek out from the round cocoon. Silcoon is 2 feet tall and weighs about 22 pounds.

Silcoon Ruby and Saphhire Pokedex Entries

“Silcoon tethers itself to a tree branch using silk to keep from falling. There, this Pokémon hangs quietly while it awaits evolution. It peers out of the silk cocoon through a small hole.” – Pokemon Ruby

“Silcoon was thought to endure hunger and not consume anything before its evolution. However, it is now thought that this Pokémon slakes its thirst by drinking rainwater that collects on its silk.” – Pokemon Sapphire

Silcoon Type

Silcoon remains a singular Bug-type and, therefore, retains all the same strengths and weaknesses against other types as Wurmple.

Silcoon Stats

Silcoon is only slightly stronger than Wurmple. Its stats total put it on the same level as fellow Bug second-evolutions: Kakuna, Metapod, and also Pickachu’s first form, Pichu.

Silcoon Base Stats

  • HP:50
  • Attack:35
  • Defense:55
  • Special Attack:25

Silcoon Moves

cascoon and silcoon screenshot from Pokemon the series

Silcoon has the special Ability, Shed Skin. This Ability has a ⅓ chance of curing the user.

“Moves” is an interesting term to use with Silcoon. As a cocoon Pokemon, it can’t really move and, hence, has no real moves. Like other triple-evolving Bug-types, this is an odd downgrade from the first form, but it is necessary to get to the promising third evolution. Silcoon can simply increase its defense and cannot learn any moves besides Harden through leveling up or TMs.

Silcoon Location

Silcoon evolves from Wurmple, so you may not need to find one in the wild. Alternatively, you may need a second or third one so that you have more opportunities to get the Dustox or Beautifly you want when you evolve it. Luckily, they are found in the wild in this second form.

Silcoon Ruby and Sapphire Location

Silcoon Evolution

Silcoon evolves into Beautifly on its own once it reaches level 10. It will take some work to get Silcoon up the three levels it needs to go to get there, but the resulting Beautilfly is worth the effort.

Beautifly

Pokemon Beautifly screenshot from the series

Beautifly, the butterfly Pokemon is the arguably prettier version of Wurmple’s third evolution. It’s got a lot more colors and looks like a classic butterfly. It still keeps the white color of a Silcoon’s husk for its core but adds on wings, antennae, a proboscis, and big blue eyes. Beautifly is about the same size as Dustox at just over 3 feet tall and weighing an average of 62 pounds.

Beautifly Ruby and Sapphire Pokedex Entries

“Beautifly’s favorite food is the sweet pollen of flowers. If you want to see this Pokémon, just leave a potted flower by an open window. Beautifly is sure to come looking for pollen.” – Pokemon Ruby

“Beautifly has a long mouth like a coiled needle, which is very convenient for collecting pollen from flowers. This Pokémon rides the spring winds as it flits around gathering pollen.” – Pokemon Sapphire

Beautifly Type

Beautilfy is a dual Bug/Flying-type Pokemon. This addition of Flying-type gives Beautifly some real options for movement and Attack. Flying also earns it immunity against Ground-types and Attacks. Since it’s a dual-type and different from any other evolutions, it will have a unique set of Type strengths and weaknesses.

Beautifly reacts normally to the following Pokemon Types:

  • Normal
  • Poison
  • Ghost
  • Steel
  • Water
  • Psychic
  • Dragon
  • Dark
  • Fairy

Beautifly is weak against the following Pokemon Types:

  • Flying
  • Rock
  • Fire
  • Electric
  • Ice

Beautifly is resistant ( 2 times the normal damage) against the following Pokemon Types:

  • Fighting
  • Bug
  • Grass

Beautifly is immune to the following Pokemon Types:

  • Ground

Beautifly Stats

Beautifly Pokedex entry

Beautfly has impressive stats for a bug Pokemon. It is a significant progression from the immobile Silcoon. Its new stats put it on the same level with other third-evolution Bug-types: Beedrill, Butterfree, and its parallel Dustox. It is also on the same level as Pokemon, such as Kubfu, Poliwhirl, and Onix.

Beautifly Moves

Beautifly has the special Ability Swarm. This Ability increases Bug-type move power by 50% when the user has ⅓ or less HP remaining. Beautifly also has the Hidden Ability, Rivalry. This Hidden Ability increases the user’s Attack if the opponent Pokemon is the same gender.

Beautifly Location

Beautifly is only obtainable by evolving Silcoon. You cannot find one in the wild. Grab an extra Wurmple or Silcoon in the wild just in case you don’t get the third evolution you want upon evolving it.

Cascoon

Silcoon Pokedex entry

Cascoon is the mirror image or sister of Silcoon. It is also the Cocoon Pokemon and looks very similar. The main difference is that Cascoon has a slight pink hue to it’s round, spiked husk. It is slightly larger than 2 feet tall and weighs around 25 pounds, making it bigger than Silcoon.

Cascoon Ruby and Sapphire Pokedex Entries

“Cascoon makes its protective cocoon by wrapping its body entirely with a fine silk from its mouth. Once the silk goes around its body, it hardens. This Pokémon prepares for its evolution inside the cocoon.” – Pokemon Ruby

“If it is attacked, Cascoon remains motionless however badly it may be hurt. It does so because if it were to move, its body would be weak upon evolution. This Pokémon will also not forget the pain it endured.” – Pokemon Sapphire

Cascoon Type

As the reflection of Silcoon, Cascoon also remains a singular Bug-Type and, therefore, retains all the same strengths and weaknesses against other types as Wurmple.

Cascoon Stats

Cascoon has the same stats as Silcoon. It is only slightly stronger than Wurmple. Its stats total put it on the same power level as its fellow Bug second evolutions: Kakuna, Metapod, and also Pichu.

Cascoon Location

Cascoon evolves from Wurmuple, so you don’t have to find one in the wild. Since its evolution result is random, you may need to get another Cascoon to get both of the third forms. There is a single location where Cascoon are found in the wild for just this situation.

Cascoon Ruby and Sapphire Location

  • Petalburg Woods

Cascoon Evolution

Cascoon evolves into Dustox once it reaches level 10. Though you’ll likely have to use your other Pokemon to help carry Cascoon up to this level, it is worth it. Dustox has more versatility and is quite the looker.

Dustox

Pokemon Dustox Pokedex entry

Dustox is the poison moth Pokemon and, finally a dual-type. It looks similar to Cascoon in that its round body is the same shape and pink color. Otherwise, it is a wildly green and red-colored winged moth with crazy yellow and black spotted eyes. It is larger than its previous form at 3 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 69.7 pounds. That makes Dustox a pretty big poisonous bug!

Dustox Ruby and Sapphire Pokedex Entries

“Dustox is instinctively drawn to light. Swarms of this Pokémon are attracted by the bright light of cities, where they wreak havoc by stripping the leaves off roadside trees for food.” – Pokemon Ruby

“Dustox is instinctively drawn to light. Swarms of this Pokémon are attracted by the bright light of cities, where they wreak havoc by stripping the leaves off roadside trees for food.” – Pokemon Sapphire

Dustox Type

Dustox is a dual Bug/Poison-type Pokemon. This combination gives it a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, making it much more handy than previous forms.

Dustox reacts normally to the following Pokemon Types:

  • Normal
  • Ground
  • Ghost
  • Steel
  • Water
  • Electric
  • Ice
  • Dragon

  • Rock
  • Fire
  • Psychic

Dustox is resistant (½ times the damage) against the following Pokemon Types:

  • Fighting
  • Poison
  • Bug
  • Grass
  • Fairy

Dustox Stats

Dustox makes a big leap forward in its stats compared to Cascoon. It’s now on the same level as its other bug counterparts with three evolutions: Beedrill, Butterfree, and Beautifly. It’s also comparable to other non-bug Pokemon like Onix, Lickitung, and Mudbray.

  • HP:60
  • Attack:50
  • Defense:70
  • Special Attack:50
  • Special Defense:90

Dustox Moves

Dustox has the special Ability, Shield Dust, just like Wurmple. This Ability prevents added effects of damaging attacks from affecting Wurmple, such as freezing or flinching. Dustox has the Hidden Ability, Compound Eyes. This Ability increases the accuracy of the user’s moves by 1.3 times.
