Whether you are playing Pokemon now or have simply watched the show, you know that some Pokemon are just fascinating. They either draw you in with their name or cool design. It’s not easy to stand out among the more than 1000 Pokemon that exist, yet some still do. When it comes to these Pokemon, you have to stop and check them out. These Pokemon make you ask the basics at least: What’s its name? What type is it? Where does it come from? Does it have evolutions? Does it have any impressive and aptly named moves? The smiling gaseous cloud Pokemon, Cosmog, is one of the exceptions.
Cosmog
Cosmog is a Generation 7 Legendary Pokemon. It first appears in Pokemon Sun and Moon, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. That game from developer Game Freak and publisher Nintendo takes place in the Alola region based off of Hawaii. The many interesting and unique tropical-based Pokemon in this region are a welcome addition to the franchise. Cosmog, coincidentally, is not really tropical or Hawaii-related at all. Rather than an island feel, Cosmog and its evolutions have a cosmic or space-based design and background.
Cosmog also has the distinction of being the origin Pokemon for the evolutions on the respective covers of Pokemon Sun, Solgaelo, and Pokemon Moon, Lunala. It is a Legendary Pokemon, which grants it some leeway to be an exception to the theme of the rest of the game as well. Luckily that exception is a gassy little could with origins in space. Regardless, not only does its design basis set it apart in this generation, but it’s also just a really fun Pokemon in general.

Cosmog Origins
The Pokedex lists its species as Nebula Pokemon. Cosmog is the only species of this type, so once again, it feels like it stands out among the rest of the Pokemon in a mysterious way. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in the space between stars, so it makes sense that Cosmog looks like a cloud of gas and the night sky.
Cosmog starts as a very small Psychic-type Pokemon. It usually is about 8 inches tall and weighs less than a quarter of a pound. Cosmic looks like a dark purple cloud with a face with two star-filled cloud poofs extending from its head. The extensions seem like antennae but actually serve as it’s arms. While it seems Cosmog is from space, the Pokedex doesn’t exactly confirm it.
The Pokedex entries in the various games describe Cosmog as follows:
- “Its body is gaseous and frail. It slowly grows as it collects dust from the atmosphere.” – Pokemon Sun
- “In ages past, it was called the child of the stars. It’s said to be a Pokémon from another world, but no specific details are known.” – Pokemon Moon
- “Even though its helpless, gaseous body can be blown away by the slightest breeze, it doesn’t seem to care.” – Ultra Sun
- “Whether or not it’s a Pokémon from this world is a mystery. When it’s in a jam, it warps away to a safe place to hide.” – Ultra Moon
- “This Pokémon came from another universe. Its gaseous body is so light that even a gentle breeze can blow it away.” – Pokemon Sword
- “Cosmog is very curious but not very cautious, often placing itself in danger. If things start to look dicey, it teleports away” – Pokemon Shield
Cosmog Base Stats:
- HP: 43
- Attack: 29
- Defense: 31
- Special Attack: 29
- Special Defense: 31
- Speed: 37
- Stats Total: 200
Cosmog doesn’t have very impressive stats when it starts out. Its numbers put it right in line with Pokemon like Scatterbug and Magikarp. Like those Pokemon, though, Cosmog has evolutions that it can grow into that have impressive stats. While Cosmog is adorable, its evolutions are more effective.
Psychic-Type
Cosmog is a Psychic-type, which sets it apart from other Pokemon that start relatively weak but then evolve into a much more powerful Pokemon. Psychic types are usually somewhat powerful or useful at least, whereas some other Types are seemingly just there as more of a companion. Magikarp, for example, can’t do much of anything until it evolves much later into Gyarados. It seems that Cosmog too, follows this pattern and is somewhat ineffective in any sort of combat situation.
Cosmog is weak against the following types:
- Bug – 2 times the damage
- Ghost – 2 times the damage
- Dark – 2 times the damage
Cosmog is damaged normally against the following types:
- Fairy
- Dragon
- Ice
- Electric
- Grass
- Water
- Fire
- Steel
- Rock
- Ground
- Poison
- Flying
- Normal
Cosmog is resistant to the following types:
- Fighting – ½ times the damage
- Psychic – ½ times the damage
Cosmog Moves
The Nebula Pokemon has the special Ability, Unaware. This Ability lets Cosmog ignore the target’s stat changes when it is attacking. While this is a useful Ability, it is lost on Cosmog as Cosmog has no moves that can damage an opponent.
Cosmogs moves upon being caught:
Move | Type | Class | Accuracy | PP | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Splash | Normal | Status | NA | 40 | Splash has no effect or damage whatsoever |
Teleport | Psychic | Status | NA | 20 | The Pokemon flees the encounter with a wild Pokemon. In later titles, the Pokemon can switch out during battle with a Pokemon in their party |
Cosmog has no other moves that it can learn or be taught from leveling up, TMs, or TRs. This lack of moves means you’ll have to keep Cosmog in your party and do what you can to level it up through the victories of your other Pokemon.
Cosmog Location
The process of getting Cosmog is odd and can’t occur until you play through the game’s main story. Once you finish the game’s final trial by successfully conquering the Pokemon League and becoming the Champion of Alola, you will begin your journey to Cosmog.
You will head to the Altar of the Sunne or the Altar of the Moone, depending on your game version. They are located in the same place but each has a different name. The Altar of the Moone or Sunne is in Vast Poni Canyon on Poni Island. You must go during the daytime if you have Pokemon Moon or during the Nighttime if you have Pokemon Sun. You’ll head for the portal up to the top of the long flight of stairs. If you can’t interact with the portal there, it’s the wrong time.
You’ll go through the portal and fly to Route 16 in the Ula’ula Meadow. Then head to the Lake of the Sunne or Moone. Continue walking forward through the long hallway and up all the stairs. You’ll interact with Solgaleo and Lunala. After this cutscene, a Cosmog will appear that you can take with you without catching it.
Location in Ultra Sun and Moon
In Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, you similarly will have to get Cosmog at the end of the game. After you defeat the Elite Four, you will travel to Iki Town on Melemele Island and walk up the Ruins of Conflict. There, you will encounter Lunala or Solgaleo, depending on your game version.
You will then battle and catch one of the two Legendary Pokemon. Then add them to your party, head to the Altar of the Sunne or Moone, and go through the portal to the reverse world either during the day in Moon or Night in Sun.
Then, travel to the Lake of the Sunne or Moone on Ula’ula Island. Enter the building ruins near the lake and follow the path to the end. There, you will have a cutscene with one of the Legendaries. Then, a Cosmog will be there that you can take without battling or catching it.
Location in Sword and Shield
In Sword and Shield, you can receive Cosmog using the HOME or via a Trade.
Alternatively, in the Crown Tundra Expansion to Sword and Shield, you can get a Cosmog after saving the town from Spectrier or Glastrier. In Freezington, there is a house with an older woman with a Spheal beside her. Head into this house and speak to another woman with a Cosmog nearby. As a reward for saving the town, she will give you her Cosmog named Fwoofy.
Location in Pokemon GO
In Pokemon GO, Cosmog is still a Legendary, but it can only be obtained through the completion of certain quests. Two quests so far allow you to encounter two Cosmogs, Starry Skies Special Research or the Cosmic Companion. Unfortunately, both options are no longer accessible unless you began them during their initial time period.
Cosmog Evolution
Cosmog will evolve on its own once it reaches level 43. It turns into a stronger but similar version of itself, Cosmoem.
Cosmoem
Cosmoem keeps the same look as Cosmog, but instead of having the funny extensions, it is now encased in a moon-colored shell. Its height is listed at a mere 1.5 inches, but it makes up for it with its weight. There’s definitely something otherworldly or cosmic about the tiny Cosmoem, as it’s Pokedex listed weight is 2204 lbs!
The Pokedex entries for Cosmoem are as follows:
- “Motionless as if dead, its body is faintly warm to the touch. In the distant past, it was called the cocoon of the stars.” – Pokemon Sun
- “There’s something accumulating around the black core within its hard shell. People think this Pokémon may come from another world.” – Pokemon Moon
- “The king who ruled Alola in times of antiquity called it the “cocoon of the stars” and built an altar to worship it.” – Pokemon Ultra Sun
- As it absorbs light, Cosmoem continues to grow. Its golden shell is surprisingly solid.” – Pokemon Ultra Moon
- “The absorption of starlight fuels this Pokémon’s growth. The shell that encases it is harder than any known material.” – Pokemon Sword
- “It sucks in dust from the air at an astounding rate, frantically building up energy within its core as preparation for evolution.” – Pokemon Shield
Cosmoem Base Stats:
- HP: 43
- Attack: 29
- Defense: 131
- Special Attack: 29
- Special Defense: 131
- Speed: 37
- Stats Total: 400
Cosmog remains essentially a noncombatant with its low attack and HP stats. It does become solid defensively, which likely comes from it’s new shell. Other Pokemon with the same stats as Cosmoem are Kadabra, Roselia, and Wailmer.
Cosmoem Type
Cosmoem is a Pyschic-type Pokemon just like Cosmog and, therefore, keeps the same type-weaknesses and strengths.
Cosmoem Moves
Cosmoem has a different special Ability from Cosmog, called Sturdy. This Ability reflects its new shell and high Defense and Special Defense stats. Sturdy makes it impossible to knock out Cosmoem with one hit, even if the attack is a One-hit KO move.
Cosmoem Moves through leveling up:
Move | Type | Class | Accuracy | PP | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cosmic Power | Psychic | Status | NA | 20 | Increases the Defense and Special Defense of its user by one stage each. |
Teleport | Pyschic | Status | NA | 20 | The Pokemon flees the encounter with a wild Pokemon. In later titles, the Pokemon can switch out during battle with a Pokemon in their party |
Cosmoem cannot learn any other moves through leveling or taught any TMs or TRs.
Cosmoem Evolution
Once Cosmoem gets to level 53, it will evolve. It will turn into either Lunala if you have Pokemon Moon or Solgaleo if you have Pokemon Sun.
Lunala
Lunala keeps some of the same colors as Cosmoem but transforms into a completely different-looking Pokemon. It now resembles a purple bat with white accents, which seem to replace the stars we saw in Cosmog. It’s further accented on its wings, head, and tail with the same pale moon color, making it seem as if the shell encasement became these parts. Lunala is 13 feet tall and 264 lbs.
Lunala certainly bears a spooky or mystical look. It appears as a combination of the night sky and the moon’s light. It is also a bat, which is traditionally a symbol of spooky. Its Pokedex entries speak of it as an ominous creature of the night that feeds on light.
Pokedex entries for Lunala:
- “It is said to be a female evolution of Cosmog. When its third eye activates, away it flies to another world.” – Pokemon Sun
- “Said to live in another world, this Pokémon devours light, drawing the moonless dark veil of night over the brightness of day.” – Pokemon Moon
- “Records of it exist in writings from long, long ago, where it was known by the name ‘the beast that calls the moon.’ ” – Pokemon Ultra Sun
- “It sometimes summons unknown powers and life-forms here to this world from holes that lead to other worlds.” – Pokemon Ultra Moon
- “Known as the Beast That Calls the Moon, this Pokémon lives by taking in any and all light and converting it into its own energy” – Pokemon Sword
- “It steals the light from its surroundings and then becomes the full moon, showering its own light across the night sky.” – Pokemon Shield
Lunala Base Stats:
- HP: 137
- Attack: 113
- Defense: 89
- Special Attack: 137
- Special Defense: 107
- Speed: 97
- Stats Total: 680
Lunala is the final evolution in a Legendary line, and it has the stats to prove it. Finally, we get a Cosmog-related Pokemon that looks impressive and can be helpful in a battle. Lunala’s stat put it on he same power level as other heavy hitter Legendaries such as Giratina, Ho-Oh, and Mewtwo.
Lunala Type
Lunala jumps from the potentially great Psychic-type to a very exciting dual type. Lunala is both a Ghost and a Psychic Pokemon. This combo means it’s strengths and weaknesses change from it’s previous types.
Lunala is weak against the following Types:
- Ghost – 4 times the damage
- Dark – 4 times the damage
Lunala is damaged normally by the following Types:
- Flying
- Ground
- Fairy
- Rock Bug
- Steel
- Fire
- Water
- Grass
- Electric
- Ice
- Dragon
Lunala is resistant to the following Types:
Poison – ½ times the damage
Psychic – ½ times the damage
Lunala is immune to the following Types:
- Normal
- Fighting
Lunala Moves
Lunala once again has its own special Ability. Shadow Shield allows Lunala to reduce the damage it takes when its HP is full. This is, again a protective feature that reflects Lunala’s previous versions and will be helpful alongside all of Lunala’s other potential moves.
Lunala Moves Learned through leveling up:

Solgaleo
Solgaleo is the final option if you have Pokemon Sun and evolve Cosmoem. It looks completely different from its previous two forms. It does keep some of the moon yellow trim but otherwise is unrecognizable as a Cosmog evolution. Solgaleo looks like a white lion with a large flower petal-like mane. It is 11 feet tall and weighs 507 lbs.
It makes sense that Solgaleo is the Legendary option for those who chose Pokemon Sun. It looks like a bright and heroic counterpart to the dark and ominous Lunala.
Solgaleo’s Pokedex entries describe it as follows:
- “It is said to live in another world. The intense light it radiates from the surface of its body can make the darkest of nights light up like midday.” – Pokemon Sun
- “This Pokémon is said to be a male evolution of Cosmog. At the activation of its third eye, it departs for another world.” – Pokemon Moon
- “Sometimes the result of its opening an Ultra Wormhole is that energy and life-forms from other worlds are called here to this world.” – Pokemon Ultra Sun
- “In writings from the distant past, it’s called by the name ‘the beast that devours the sun.’ ” – Pokemon Ultra Moon
- “When light radiates from its body, this Pokémon could almost appear to be the sun. It will dispel any darkness and light up the world.” – Pokemon Sword
- “Solgaleo was once known as the Beast That Devours the Sun. Energy in the form of light radiates boundlessly from it.” – Pokemon Shield
Solgaleo Base Stats:
- HP: 137
- Attack: 137
- Defense:107
- Special Attack: 113
- Special Defense: 89
- Speed: 97
- Stats Total: 680
Solgaleo has similar stats to Lunala except that their Defense and Attack numbers are reversed, as well as their Special Attack and Special Defense. These stats again put Solgaleo in the same power range as Pokemon like Lugia, Zekrom, and Hoopa.
Solgaleo Type
Solgaleo again makes an exciting jump from a strictly Psychic-type to a dual Type. Solgaleo combines its previous forms’ potential with the versatility of Steel-type. This combination means that while it’s similar to Lunala, it will be effective and weak against a different set of Pokemon-types.
Solgaleo is weak against the flowing Pokemon Type:
- Ground – 2 times the damage
- Ghost – 2 times the damage
- Fire – 2 times the damage
- Dark – 2 times the damage
Solgaleo is damaged normally by the following Pokemon Types:
- Fighting
- Bug
- Water
- Electric
Solgaleo is resistant to the following Pokemon Types:
- Normal – ½ times the damage
- Flying – ½ times the damage
- Rock – ½ times the damage
- Steel – ½ times the damage
- Grass – ½ times the damage
- Psychic – ½ times the damage
- Ice – ½ times the damage
- Dragon – ½ times the damage
- Fairy – ½ times the damage
Solgaleo is immune to the following Pokemon Types:
- Poison
Solgaleo Moves
Solgaleo has a unique signature special Ability different from its previous forms. Its Ability, Full Metal Body, prevents the reduction of its stats by other Pokemon’s Abilities or moves. Full Metal Body is a very powerful Ability and add-on for a Pokemon with a lot of potential in battle.
Solgaleo Moves learned through leveling up:
