Many will likely remember the early seasons of the Pokemon TV series in which Ash, Misty, and Brock travel around together. In the 50th episode of the show in March of 1999, an egg hatches and out pops a new Pokemon, Togepi. The Pokemon looks like a baby and seems like it’s partially still in its egg in this first form. It stays with Misty for what seems like a long time in this first form and displays some power. Everyone wondered about Togepi, though, and when or if it would evolve. This mystery continued for those who didn’t jump on to play Pokemon Gold and Silver, released in November of 1999 in Japan and 2000 in North America.
Meet Togepi
Togepi makes its colorful half-egg-wearing debut early in Gold and Silver for the Game Boy Color. It does begin as an egg given to the player that eventually hatches, just as in the TV series. There aren’t a lot of Pokemon that look like Togepi, and at the time of its debut, there weren’t any that even seemed similar. Togepi is an adorable star egg-looking Pokemon, but that didn’t make the Pokemon any less mysterious.
Gold and Silver are the kickoff to the second generation of Pokemon games released by developer Game Freak and publishers Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. It is also the first introduction of a new set of Pokemon to discover, catch, and train. Toegpi is one of those new Pokemon and a fascinating one with its two evolutions, Togetic and Togekiss.
Though this spikey star began in Gold and Silver, Togepi continues appearing in Pokemon games. It’s currently in 34 of the main series titles and makes appearances in side games as well, with its last game being 2022’s Legends: Arceus.

Togepi Origins
Despite looking like a star stuck in half and eggshell, Togepi is known as the Spike Ball Pokemon. It stands just a foot tall and weighs a little over 3 pounds. Togepi is originally a Normal-type Pokemon and remains normal until Generation VI of the game series. In 2013’s Pokemon X and Y, Togepi appears as a Fairy-type instead and remains that way today. This makes more sense based on the mystery and latent abilities it displays in the Pokemon TV series.
Oddly, most of the subsequent Pokedex entries say the same thing rather than building upon the original text. Even when Togepi shifts from Normal to Fairy, the Pokdex entries remain identical to the first notes in 1999. It should be noted that there isn’t really any information when Ash tries to look Togepi up in the Pokdex in the TV series, either. This colorful, smiling egg is shrouded in mystery and certainly destined for more.
The Pokedex entries in Pokemon Gold and Silver describe Togepi as follows:
“The shell seems to be filled with joy. It is said that it will share good luck when treated kindly.” – Gold
“A proverb claims that happiness will come to anyone who can make a sleeping Togepi stand up.” – Silver

Togepi is somewhat weak in this first form, especially combined with being a Normal-type. Its stats totals align it strength-wise with other Pokemon like Zubat, Starly, and Noibat. These Pokemon all have evolutions to grow into, and luckily, so does Togepi.
Togepi Type
Normal-types aren’t very exciting when it comes to Battling. These Pokemon often don’t have the same Type effectiveness advantage as other types and therefore sometimes get left behind. Instead, many Normal-type Pokemon are adorable looking. When Togepi switched to Fairy-type it became a much more powerful and versatile Pokemon, but kept the cuteness. Below is a comparison between the Normal and Fairy type effectiveness of Togepi

Togepi Location In Gold and Silver
To get a Togepi, you must defeat the first Gym Leader, Falkner in Violet City. Then go to the Pokemon Center there and talk to Professor Elm’s assistant, who will give you an egg. The egg eventually hatches on its own into Togepi if you keep it in your party while you adventure. Since Togepi can learn moves through leveling up to level 38, it may be beneficial to wait until this time to evolve it, depending on your plan for its moveset.
Togepi Evolution
Togepi evolves into Togetic once it reaches maximum Happiness and then naturally attempts to make the jump to its next level. There are a few easy ways to boost happiness levels in the game.
- Take the Pokemon for grooming from Daisy in Pallet Town
- Give the Pokemon vitamin
- Use the Pokemon in big battles
- Level Up the Pokemon
- Walk with the Pokemon in your party
- Get Your Pokemon a haircut from the Haircut Brothers
- Catch the Pokemon with the special Pokeball in Azelea Town, which you get from giving Kurt a Green Apricorn(The Pokemon will start with Happiness at 200)
Togetic
Togetic looks similar to Togepi but is no longer in an eggshell. Instead, the colors and shape of the egg make up Togetic’s body. Now, it has a neck and wings accompanying its spikey head, arms, and legs. Togetic is double the size of Togepi at 2 feet tall and weighs just over 7 pounds. Togetic also always seems to be smiling, which makes sense as it is known as the Happiness Pokemon.
The Gold and Silver Pokedex entries for Togetic are as follows:
“They say that it will appear before kindhearted, caring people and shower them with happiness.” – Gold
“It grows dispirited if it is not with kind people. It can float in midair without moving its wings.” – Silver

Togetic Location
The only way to get Togetic is by evolving Togepi. It is not available anywhere in the wild.
Togetic Evolution
To evolve Togetic into the final form of Togekiss, you must expose it to a Shiny Stone. Togekiss and the Shiny Stone do not exist in the first appearance of Togepi. Togetic is Togepi’s only evolution in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Togekiss is only available in games beginning with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl on the Nintendo DS in 2006. At this point, Togepi and its two evolutions are still Normal and Normal/Flying-types.
Togekiss
Togekiss looks like a manta ray with the same pattern as Togepi’s egg on its white body and Togepi’s spiked head. It is known as the Jubilee Pokemon, which makes sense because it does look delighted. It is 4 foot 11 inches tall and weighs just over 83 pounds, making it a good deal larger than its previous forms.
Togekiss Pokedex entries in its first and most recent appearances
“It will never appear where there is strife. Its sightings have become rare recently.” – Pokemon Diamond and Pearl
“Scant few have ever sighted this Pokémon. After studying what literature remains, I am certain Togekiss will reveal itself when peace reigns in the land.” – Legends: Arceus

Togekiss is only obtainable by evolving Togetic, which is first an option in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
