Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem is a 1994 tactical RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. The game was released exclusively in Japan for the SNES, known locally as the Super Famicom.
Upon release, the game was seen as a positive step forward for the series, and time has been kind to its perception among long-time fans. Its gameplay innovations were particularly praised. Sales for Fire Emblem: Mystery Emblem were some of the series’ best at the time, clocking in at over 770,000 copies sold. This later resulted in a 2010 remake of the game for Nintendo DS, titled Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem Premise
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem is presented over two ‘Books,’ which separate the story into two parts. This allows for an expansive story to be told over a longer period of time, with a two-year time jump between the two Books.
In terms of gameplay, the game resembles the other titles in the series at the time. You control Marth’s army, sending it to battle across Archanea. These battles are turn-based, with the main objective being to capture the enemy base or defeat all of your opponents. Characters have their own class, which affects their effectiveness in combat. Over the course of the game, you can recruit more characters, adding to your army.
There is limited gameplay outside of the combat. Cutscenes are used to propel the story forward, with dialogue playing out between characters. This quickly leads to more combat, with it being the game’s main mechanic.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem Main Characters
Fire Emblem games have always been popular for their array of characters, some of which appear throughout multiple games in the series. Mystery of the Emblem is no different, with a wide variety of recruitable characters and powerful enemies.
Some, though, are more important than others. These are the main characters that you need to know before playing Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem:
- Marth: Marth is the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem. A prince of the kingdom of Altea, the young Marth must set off on a journey of his own and live up to his family heritage to seal Medeus.
- Caeda: Caeda is Marth’s fiance. She is the princess of the Kingdom of Talis, and would follow Marth to her doom if necessary.
- Hardin: Hardin is the antagonist of the game, as well as the Prince of Aurelis. He begins on Marth’s side, although by Book 2 is possessed by Gharnef’s dark orb.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem Titles in the Series
Fire Emblem is a series that, for much of its lifespan, has been exclusive to the Japan region. While it first debuted back in 1990, it wasn’t until 2003’s Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade that the series made its way to the West, opening up an entirely new potential audience.
Since that point, the series has gained a massive amount of popularity, with plenty of innovation throughout the years ensuring that Fire Emblem games feel fresh each time around, whether that be on home consoles or portable devices.
New titles in the Fire Emblem series continued to be released as recently as 2023, over three decades after it first began. Its enduring popularity is a sign that the franchise won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, with original developer Intelligent Systems still at the helm.
