Beginning in 2013 with the release of Pokemon X & Y, Generation 6 is one of the most popular periods of the series’ history. It marked a huge leap in technology, with the franchise leaving behind the sprites art style that fans had become so accustomed to in favor of full 3D graphics.
Despite making huge strides in this department, the games followed the traditional structure of a typical Pokemon title, with Gym Leaders, rivals – that sort of standard stuff.
These two games aren’t the only titles in Generation 6. Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire were also released in 2014, as remakes of the 2002 games Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire. We’re going to show you all the characters and Pokemon that you need to know from all of these titles!

As with most titles in the Pokemon series, the games of Generation 6 show players’ progress via battles against Gym Leaders throughout the game. These Gym Leaders give players coveted Gym Badges as a reward for defeating them. Each battle features a different Pokemon type, so throughout the game, they test the strength and versatility of your entire team.
After each Gym Leader is defeated, the games of Generation 6 have just one test left for players: the Elite Four. The Elite Four are usually the best trainers in that region, culminating in a battle against the Pokemon Champion.
These are all some of the most notable battles across Pokemon Generation 6. To help you navigate them, we’ve put together a full guide to the Gym Leaders and Elite Four in all of the games in Generation 6, including Pokemon X & Y and Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

The Pokemon of Generation 6

Generation 6 of the Pokemon series introduced a ton of new designs into the fold. It was a smaller Generation with Pokemon X & Y compared to usual, but there’s still plenty to love here. With Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire bringing back some of the classic Pokemon, there’s something for new and returning players in Generation 6.

Allies and Rivals in Pokemon Generation 6

©screenshot from Pokemon X.
The structure of most Pokemon games is pretty similar. After you set off on your adventure, you’re greeted with a cast of allies and rivals who either help or hinder your journey. Gen 6 is no different in this regard. In both Pokemon X & Y and Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, we’re going to talk you through the key allies and rivals.
Pokemon X & Y Allies and Rivals
- Professor Sycamore: Professor Sycamore is the Pokemon Professor for the Kalos region. His focus of study surrounds Mega Evolution, and he sends you your starter Pokemon via Tierno.
- Tierno: Tierno is a Pokemon trainer with a passion for dancing. You battle Tierno throughout the game, serving as one of its rivals, although he remains a friend.
- Calem: If Calem is not chosen as the player character, he is the main rival of Pokemon X & Y. He exists mainly as a way for players to figure out if they’re leveled correctly, with multiple battles throughout the game.
- Serena: Serena is Calem’s equal. If Serena is not chosen as the player character, she is instead the main rival of Pokemon X & Y. Again, she is used for players to track their own progress through appropriately leveled battles.
- Shauna: Shauna’s role is similar to Tierno’s. She’s a close friend of the player from the very start of the game, but goes on a Pokemon trainer journey of her own. Players must face her occasionally, but much less frequently than Calem / Serena.
- Lysandre: Lysandra is the leader of the evil group, Team Flare, and serves as the game’s main antagonist. He wants to wipe out the population of the planet, a plan that players must put a stop to.
Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Allies and Rivals
- Professor Birch: Professor Brich is the Pokemon Professor for Littleroot Town, as well as the wider Hoenn region. His focus is Pokemon habitats. Like every other Pokemon Professor, Birch gives the protagonist their starter at the beginning of the game.
- Brendan: Brendan is the main rival of Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, but only if the player chooses to play as May. Players will fight a total of five times against Brendan as a way to measure progress in-game.
- May: May is the main rival of Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, but only if the player chooses to play as Brendan. She takes part in all the same fights as Brendan, otherwise.
- Wally: Wally is the secondary rival of Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, no matter who the player chooses to play as. He teaches players the ropes of catching Pokemon, before becoming a trainer himself.
