The road to freedom can be a lonely one, but it all starts at mile zero. Road 96: Mile 0, developed by DigixArt, is the prequel game to Road: 96. Released in April 2023, and on the PlayStation Series, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC, this narrative adventure game sees the player seek freedom from oppression the only way they can.
You alternate between two characters, Zoe, who debuted in Road: 96, and Kaito, who appeared first in the game, Lost in Harmony. Together and apart, the two teens try to survive in this corrupt country, making choices that will ultimately affect the outcome of the nation.
Road 96: Mile 0 Premise
Taking place in the fictional nation of Petria, the game follows the story of Zoe and Kaito. Zoe comes from an upper-class background with no real friends. Her father is a high-ranking official in the corrupt government, and being a moral teenager, Zoe doesn’t like to hang out with other rich kids. The only ‘friend’ she has is the son of the corrupt president, Colton Tyrak. And even then, he’s kind of a jerk.
Kaito, however, has just moved to the town of White Springs and is from a working-class background. As such, he doesn’t have much, if any, common ground with anyone there. And what’s more, his parents are on the ‘wrong side of the tracks,’ as it were. As such, most people look down on him.
Save, perhaps, Zoe herself.
These two outcasts have been best friends for quite some time, but the more they live in White Sands, the more and more they feel like they either have to get out or find their way through the corruption. And what’s more, their choices might not necessarily align with each other’s.
But there’s a bit more than just heartbreaking and nerve-grinding choices to be made, Road 96: Mile 0 is also a musical rhythm game! Like Lost in Harmony, the player will sometimes take control of the protagonists in a surreal game where you have to guide them through various courses and tracks. Hitting the right buttons along the way, and making sure you collect all the goodies as well.
Road 96: Mile 0 Main Characters
- Zoe. The first half of the main characters. She first appeared in Road 96 as a recurring NPC who is also looking to escape the country. Here, she isn’t a runaway just yet but is more than unhappy with the current regime.
- Kaito. The second half of the main duo. He first appeared in Lost in Harmony, and just as before, Kaito is more than willing to take risks.
- The Prime Minster. Zoe’s father. An unnamed man who holds a high rank in the local government. He’s behind many cruelties that the current regime inflicts, even if he does have a soft spot for his daughter. Whether or not that’s enough to redeem the man is up for debate, but Zoe is more than upset with him.
- Adam. Returning from the first game, Adam is Sonya’s bodyguard. Though just as clumsy as ever, he does get a larger role this time around.

Like many games these days, there aren’t any true cheat codes in Road 96: Mile 0. At least not without extensive modding and coding. That said, there are various tips and tricks the player can employ to make their journey a bit easier to handle!
- It’s short. I know, I know, it’s a weird tip, but hear me out. Road 96: Mile 0 is only about 4-5 hours long, you can probably beat it in one sitting if you have the endurance for it. But because of this, don’t be afraid to replay the game if you get an outcome you’re unhappy with.
- Search for stickers. There are various stickers plastered around the world and stories that the player can find. While they don’t offer any tangible benefits (this isn’t an RPG), they are fun to collect, and you do get to hang them up in your hideout.
- Interact with everything. Any good gamer will try to poke and prod everything they can see, and probably steal whatever’s nailed down along the way.
