Don Coyner Is Leaving Microsoft

None

According to two Microsoft insiders, Don Coyner is no longer a part of Microsoft’s Design and Experience Group. He has reportedly been replaced by Emma Williams, who was a part of the team that designed the new metro-influenced Xbox 360 interface.

Coyner has been at the helm of the Xbox-centric Group since 1999. Originally, he was hired to simply direct the marketing team, but as time went on, his role expanded into User Experience Design.

Dean Takahashi, a game journalist from California, said that Coyner took much of his inspiration from Apple’s user experience philosophy. “He wanted the whole user experience to be consistent, like an Apple product,” said Takahashi, “where everything from the screen to the package looked like it was designed by just one person.”

However, Coyner’s replacement will have their work cut out for them. With Microsoft gearing up to launch a brand new console, it may be difficult to repeat Coyner’s decade of increasing success. The Xbox 360 was released in 2005, and sales have been steady since it hit the shelves. In the past, console sales have dropped off after five years, but the 360 will finish the year as the best-selling console of 2011.

Microsoft has declined to make any kind of official comment at this time, so there’s no word on what Coyner’s future plans will be. But considering that he’s already worked for Nintendo and Microsoft, there’s really only one option left. Am I right, Sony?
