Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom Cheats & Cheat Codes for Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Windows, and More

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is a 1994 arcade game based on the popular tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons has been a popular franchise for decades and over the years, it has created quite an uproar. In the 1980s, Dungeons & Dragons came under fire at the height of the Satanic Panic. Many parents and mainstream media claimed that the game caused kids to lose their grip on reality and equated playing the tabletop game to devil worship. These scandals mimicked the modern argument of video games causing violent behavior, but they only made Dungeons & Dragons more popular.

It should come as no surprise then, that when technology advanced enough video games and other forms of media would piggyback off of Dungeons & Dragons’ popularity. Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is just one of many video games to base itself on the tabletop game. Tower of Doom was developed and published by Capcom. Originally, the game was the first of two arcade games that were meant to be played in a physical arcade. Eventually, Tower of Doom and its sequel, Shadow over Mystara, were packaged together and released for the Sega Saturn. In 2013, both games were released as a set called Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. This allowed both games to be downloaded on the PlayStation 3, WiiU, Windows (via Steam), and Xbox 360.

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom and its sequel are side-scrolling beat ’em up style games with a bit of role-playing mixed in. Overall, the game has received positive feedback with 92% of Google users claiming to like the game. Steam rates the bundle a 9 out of 10. Metacritic reports that the reviews are generally favorable and IGN rates it an 8.3 out of 10. One of IGN’s top reviews about the Chronical of Mystara calls it a “great coin-op D&D duo gets a long-overdue re-release, preserving the spirit of the originals in the process.”

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom Premise

Tower of Doom and its sequel, Shadow over Mystara, take place in the Mystara campaign setting. Mystara is a common, popular Dungeons & Dragons setting and during the ’80s and ’90s, it was the basic setting for most D&D campaigns. Since Tower of Doom is an arcade side-scroller, the plot of the game is relatively basic. The Republic of Darokin is in the middle of a horrible siege. Monsters are assaulting this Mystara territory in increasingly alarming numbers, leaving the republic on the last leg of defense. Four adventurers, the Fighter, the Elf, the Cleric, and the Dwarf, rise to stand against the monster invasion.

As the group of heroes helps various areas in Darokin, merchant lord Corwyn Linton recruits them to investigate the monster attacks. Their investigation leads them to discover that the Arch Lich Deimos is behind the monster uprising. The narrative eventually drives the heroes to Deimos’ Tower of Doom, where they have to confront and defeat the Arch Lich.

The gameplay is a more advanced side-scroller than most. Each playable character has basic attacks and D&D class-specific abilities. Most of the enemies they come across will also have the same or similar abilities, often with better range than the player characters. This forces players to proceed with caution and strategy in mind. To a certain degree, the game is also choice-based. Players have to choose which areas they visit when the time comes and it is impossible to get to every single area in the game in a single playthrough.

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom Main Characters

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom allows players to choose from one of four main characters. In addition to these playable characters, there are a few other major characters that fill out the cast. It’s important to keep in mind that in its original form, Tower of Doom was an arcade game. Although it can be played on modern setups now, the game hasn’t been altered much from its original state. In 1994, when the game first came out, arcade side-scrollers didn’t have much in the way of character development. The lore and characters were simple because the games were really about the gameplay itself.

Playable Characters:

  • The Elf: The Elf carries a sword that she can perform close-range attacks with. Her physical damage output isn’t that good, but she’s a magic user. Her arcane abilities make up for her lack of physical damage. She has seven spells that she can use, which include Magic Missile, Invisibility, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Polymorph Others, Ice Storm, and Cloudkill. Some of these spells, like Magic Missile and Fireball, are some of the most popular Dungeons & Dragons spells out there.
  • The Fighter: The Fighter is a physical damage dealer who has good range and hits hard. The Fighter is one of the most balanced options the player can choose from, as he’s both powerful and has good survivability. The Fighter also has the highest HP out of all four characters.
  • The Dwarf: The Dwarf has a quick speed combo which makes him to hardest-hitting close-range attacker. His horizontal range is extremely short, but he has the best vertical range in the game. He can hit enemies that are high up that other characters cannot.
  • The Cleric: The Cleric is a mix between a physical damage dealer and a spellcaster. He has better physical attack power than the Elf, but he only knows five spells. His spell list includes Hold Person, Striking, Continual Light, Sticks to Snakes, and Cure Serious Wounds. He’s also proficient with a shield, making him a good pick for high defensive capabilities. Traditionally in Dungeons & Dragons, the Cleric is the healer class, so the Cleric is also a good pick for healing himself and his team.

Crucial Non-Player Characters:

  • Merchant Lord Corwyn Linton: Corwyn Linton isn’t a prominent figure throughout Tower of Doom, but he is the force that brings the heroes together. After word of their good deeds begins spreading, Linton recruits the Fighter, the Elf, the Dwarf, and the Cleric to investigate the monsters plaguing Darokin. Without him, the heroes may never have been sent off on their adventures.
  • Arch Lich Deimos: Arch Lich Deimos is the main antagonist and the final boss of Tower of Doom. As the group of heroes investigates the growing number of monster threats, they eventually uncover that Deimos is the one behind it all. Their journey leads them to the Arch Lich’s Tower of Doom, where they must face off in one final showdown with Deimos.

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom Titles in the Series

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is the first of Capcom’s two arcade games based on Dungeons & Dragons. Shadow over Mystara is the second and final game of the series. That said, after the popularity of these arcade side-scrollers, both games have been re-released a few times.

  • Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (1994) – The first arcade game in the series.
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (1996) – The second and final arcade game in the series.
  • The Dungeons & Dragons Collection (1999) – A bundle that includes Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara that was released for the Sega Saturn console.
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara (2013) – A bundle that includes Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara that was released for modern consoles. These consoles include the PlayStation 3, WiiU, Windows (via Steam), and Xbox 360.

In 2024, it’s nearly impossible for a player to get their hands on the original Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom. To play the game now, players will need to acquire the Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara bundle through the appropriate consoles. Since the original version of the game isn’t an option anymore, this guide will take a look at options for the Chronicles of Mystara bundle.

Surprisingly, there aren’t any cheats, exploits, trainers, or mods for the game, though. Considering the original game came out in 1994, this is somewhat surprising. Games from the ’90s have a reputation for cheats and codes that make the game easier to play. Sadly, none of that seems to be available for the modern Tower of Doom. Even modding the game on PC seems to be nonexistent. Popular mod sites like Wemod don’t have any cheats, mods, or trainers for Chronicles of Mystara.

Since there are no cheats or mods, this guide will take a look at the game’s secret ending, trophies, and achievements instead.

Unlock the Extended Ending

Tower of Doom has an extended ending that players will only get if they meet the proper criteria. Players need to activate all four playable characters during the Deimos final boss fight. To get the extra cutscene at the end of the credits, all four characters need to survive the fight. The cutscene depicts the group heading off on their next adventure together, hinting at another game on the horizon.
