E3 2016: More Console Games Coming From Marvel

One of the coolest surprises of Sony’s E3 press conference was that Insomniac Games is making a Spider-Man title. Spidey’s got all the right moves, and the game looks like it’ll be a blast to play. But wait… there’s more!

In an interview with Polygon, Marvel’s vice president of games Jay Ong suggested that the company has some epic gaming plans that he can’t quite reveal yet. And he’s not talking about cheap mobile cash-ins or games chained to a movie release schedule.

“Is [ Spider-Man ] a signal of things to come?” he said. “Oh, yes. Absolutely. And we can’t wait to tell the world about it.”

Ong indirectly indicated that Marvel has learned from the famous Batman Arkham series. The company is being extremely choosy in which studios are allowed to develop its games and is letting the games be developed separate from the schedule of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, Insomniac’s Spider-Man game is completely unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film.

It looks like Marvel is finally taking video games seriously. After a slew of Marvel superhero games that have ranged from decent to downright abominable (looking at you, X-Men: Destiny ), it’s time the company aimed for greatness. If it can do the same thing for its video games that it’s done with its movies, we’re all in for a treat.
