Electronic Arts announced The Sims 4 today, marking the return of a full-fledged release in the popular franchise. The game will release sometime in 2014, five years after the 2009 release of The Sims 3.
Since EA is intricately familiar with the always-online controversy, they’ve already addressed the issue by promising that the title will be available in both a single-player and offline capacity.
While people are cracking jokes about the franchise’s history of releasing countless expansion packs, others are still showing their displeasure for EA’s DRM history. Some are even claiming that, despite the fact that the game will be playable offline, it’s too little too late.
Others are either ignoring the fact that the game is playable offline, or acting as if EA will pull a bait and switch. “Will require an internet connection to play… Deal with it,” reads a comment on IGN.
The game’s announcement also came with a comment from EA on the franchise:
“The Sims franchise is fueled by the passion and creativity of its millions of fans around the world, Their continued devotion to the franchise ignites the fire of creativity of the team at The Sims Studio, driving them to continually improve and innovate on one of the world’s most successful simulation game that has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.”
