Soccer Brawl is a soccer game set in a futuristic sci-fi world. It was released in arcades worldwide on February 14, 1992. It became available for the Neo Geo AES later that year and for the Neo Geo CD in 1995. The game was developed and published by the iconic SNK.
This cyborg soccer game was one of the most successful arcade games when it was released. It outperformed several popular titles, like Hat Trick Hero. Soccer Brawl received positive reviews from both critics and players alike. In more recent years it is still considered one of the best games for the Neo Geo.
Soccer Brawl Premise
Soccer Brawl takes one of the world’s most popular sports and not only adds futuristic elements but also switches the rules up. In this game, there are no fouls or misconduct. Be as rough as you want against the opposing side. You can even temporarily knock them down.
Players can choose between four different difficulty levels: Beginner, Normal, Hard, and MVS. In this fast-paced arcade game, each half of the match can last either 15, 30, 45, or 90 seconds. After players decide on the difficulty and speed, they have the option of either League Mode or VS Mode.
League Mode: Play a seven-match tournament against all of the other AI teams.
VS Mode: Give your friend a second controller and play a match against them
Soccer Brawl Teams
While Soccer Brawl does not have a main character, it does have eight different teams for players to pick from. The players are a mixture of bionic people and cyborgs, adding to the sci-fi feel. Team captains wear a handkerchief and can’t shoot but they can make a special power shot. The players have super-charged shots and punches against the opposing team as well as power meters. Players’ special power shots depend on which national team they are from.
- United States: Players wear purple and white. Their super shot flies on a “figure eight” wave trajectory.
- Germany: Players wear yellow and black, like their flag. Their super shot flies in a sine zig-zag motion.
- England: Players wear yellow and purple. Their super shot flies on a “figure eight” wave trajectory.
- Spain: Players wear pink and light green. Their super shot is a large energy sphere surrounded by eight smaller spheres.
- Brazil: Players wear light green and yellow. Their super shot is a large energy sphere surrounded by eight smaller spheres.
- Italy: Players wear pink and blue. Their super shot flies in a sine zig-zag motion
- South Korea: Players wear blue and light green. Their super shot flies in a circle rotation behind the captain and then flies in a straight line, forming a question mark.
- Japan: Players wear red and white, like their flag. Their super shot flies in a circle rotation behind the captain and then flies in a straight line, forming a question mark.
Soccer Brawl Series
This game is not only one of many sports games by SNK, but it is also part of the Super Sidekicks series. Super Sidekicks is a series of retro soccer games by SNK in the ’90s. Super Soccer technically succeeds the first official game of the series, Super Sidekicks, but is considered part of it.
