Originally released June 17, 1996, Final Doom is the third and final episode of the original Doom games. The title uses all the same assets as Doom II, beginning its life as a fan project from TeamTNT. After seeing TeamTNT’s work for itself, id Software collaborated with the studio to release Final Doom as a full retail experience, delivering two new 32-level episodes. Notably, the PS1 version of Final Doom is slightly different from the PC version in that it also contains the Master Levels from Doom II. Further, due to technical constraints, it does not contain the full 64 levels in the PC version and some boss encounters. Final Doom would eventually be de-listed from digital storefronts and repackaged as part of future releases of Doom II. The title is somewhat of an unofficial expansion to the sequel or a sort of Doom 2.5.
Most fans consider Final Doom to be the hardest of the original Doom games. While both of the new episodes, TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, are harder than both Doom and Doom II, the general consensus is that The Plutonia Experiment contains the hardest levels in the entirety of classic Doom. As a result, Final Doom has a bit of a cult following from players who prefer a more challenging experience.
Final Doom Premise

The third game in the Doom franchise, Final Doom features two separate episodes containing 32 levels each (referred to as “megawads” by the Doom community). The first of these episodes, TNT: Evilution, is a side story to the original Doom in which demons from Hell invade the UAC facilities on the moons of Jupiter (with the original Doom taking place at similar facilities on the moons of Mars). The second episode, The Plutonia Experiment, picks up after the events of Doom II: Hell on Earth. Following the Doomguy’s successful repelling of the demon invasion of Earth, a group of demons infiltrate a secret UAC facility where scientists are working on a powerful device known as a Quantum Accelerator. Realizing that the demons and their leader, the Gatekeeper, intend to use the device against humanity, a lone space marine heads into the facility to stop the forces of evil.
In terms of its gameplay, Final Doom is similar to both Doom and Doom II. A collaboration between original developer id Software and TeamTNT, Final Doom utilizes all the same assets as Doom II but delivers 64 new levels split into two 32-level episodes. Players once again control a nameless space marine who navigates labyrinthine corridors and eliminates groups of frightening foes using a wide range of powerful weaponry. Pathways through levels are blocked by color-coded doors, which the player must find and collect keys for while surviving enemy attacks and taking out enemies. Some areas within levels contain what are known as “monster closets”, where a horde of enemies surprises and assaults the player. Further, some levels pit the player against special boss-like enemies.
Final Doom Main Characters

The Doom games have increasingly featured more developed stories that expand on the lore of the UAC, the space marines, and the eponymous “Doomguy” beginning with Doom II. Final Doom continues that tradition by featuring two separate campaigns with a fully fleshed-out narrative. Players control another nameless space marine similar to the original “Doomguy”, but canonically he is a different character from the original game’s protagonist. The first campaign in Final Doom, TNT: Evilution, tells the story of a separate UAC colony on the moons of Jupiter following the events of the original Doom. The second campaign, The Plutonia Experiment, takes place immediately following the events of Doom II and introduces a special new demon in the Gatekeeper. Main characters in Final Doom include:
- Doomguy: A nameless member of the space marines protecting the UAC space colonies, the “Doomguy” is the player character in Doom. Final Doom‘s version of this eponymous hero is a lucky marine who avoids demon attack or zombification following Hell’s invasion of the UAC facilities on Jupiter’s moons. In the second episode of Final Doom, The Plutonia Experiment, the Doomguy returns from leave to help stop the Gatekeeper.
- Gatekeeper: A malicious demon who seems to lead the other forces of Hell that invade the research complex where the UAC is working on a Quantum Accelerator. Capable of opening gates to Hell and summoning its forces at a whim, the Gatekeeper has plans to use the Quantum Accelerator to help launch another full-scale invasion of Earth.
Games in the Doom Series
While it’s not the *first* first-person shooter, Doom is the game that would popularize the genre and inspire a host of clones hoping to reach its gargantuan success. For more than 30 years, the Doom franchise has been synonymous with the core tenets of the FPS genre, with the most recent entries continuing to evolve the formula and stand as some of the best entries in what’s one of the most popular game types since the release of the original Doom. Final Doom Cheat FAQs
How do I use cheats in Final Doom?
Activating cheat codes in Final Doom depends on which version players have. The DOS and Mac versions of Final Doom allow players to simply type in cheats using the keyboard at any point during gameplay. No further steps are needed. On the PlayStation version, players need to pause the game and enter specific button inputs using the controller. Alternatively, players with a Game Shark device can use it to enable several gameplay-altering cheats.
What’s the God Mode cheat in Final Doom?
Again, the cheat for invincibility (often referred to as “God Mode” in the Doom series) varies depending on which version of Final Doom players have. The PC version requires players to type iddqd. The PlayStation version of Final Doom has a different input sequence for the God Mode cheat. Players need to pause the game and then input the following: Down, L2, Square, R1, Right, L1, Left, Circle.
What’s the difference between Doom and Final Doom?
Final Doom is technically the third game in the Doom series and is a collaboration between id Software and TeamTNT. The game uses all the same assets from Doom II and has a story that picks up immediately following the events of the Doom sequel. Final Doom is largely considered to be the most difficult of the original Doom games and was eventually condensed into future releases of Doom II.
How long to beat Final Doom?
The amount of time necessary for players to beat Final Doom depends on a couple of factors. If players use cheats, they can bypass some of Final Doom‘s more difficult moments. Otherwise, players may find themselves needing to repeat levels on higher difficulty modes. Regardless, most playthroughs of Final Doom take between 12 and 15 hours. The same holds true for a completionist playthrough, as players will see and do everything in Final Doom by beating all the levels it contains.
