Final Fantasy XIV Returns To The Drawing Board

Final Fantasy XIV Returns To The Drawing Board

None

Since its release last year, Final Fantasy XIV has seen nothing but trouble from press and gamers alike. Square Enix has been apologetic about the circumstances, subscribers given month after free month while the development team has struggled to rework an initially broken and socially inept MMO into something that people would want to play.

At a recent press conference in Tokyo, though, CEO Yoichi Wada unveiled that the process of bringing Final Fantasy XIV up to snuff would demand not only a reworking of its interface and mending of its technical/connectivity issues, but a complete gameplay overhaul. It needs to be taken back to basics and redesigned from the ground up to be enjoyable.

The intent for now, however, is to keep trying to update what is already there, while Square Enix considers ways to work these changes into the game through its updates, without taking the title offline and putting it back through development. It’s rare for a major publisher to admit that a game is an abject failure, and rarer still for one to try to fix such pariah. With the sort of time and financial commitment that an MMO demands for its development and upkeep, however, throwing it all away simply isn’t an option.
