The Mobile World Congress has been full of interesting news – some good and some not-so-good. We learned the price of the HTV Vive, for example, and it’s more than I thought it’d be: $800 smackers. That’s $200 more than the Oculus Rift, and considering I’d have to commit to some serious PC upgrades before I’m VR ready, it’s about $800 more than I can afford. We don’t yet know how much Sony’s PlayStation VR hardware will cost, but it’ll likely be the cheapest of the bunch. That is, unless you’re planning to pre-order Samsung’s latest Galaxy smartphone.
Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones at the Mobile World Congress. Other than being Samsung’s most powerful smartphone yet, with tons of storage and best-in-class displays, Samsung has sweetened the pot by offering an awesome pre-order bonus. When you pre-order your new Galaxy device, you’ll receive a free Samsung Gear VR. The Gear VR is definitely meant to appeal to a broader, more casual user-base, but reviews were generally very favorable and positive. The HMD itself has Oculus technology on the inside and is powered by your device, so with a Galaxy S7 on the inside I’m betting this deal will introduce a ton of people to the world of VR.
