Oculus Pulls Galaxy Note 7 Support From Gear VR

Oculus Pulls Galaxy Note 7 Support From Gear VR

Samsung’s Gear VR headset is a great entry-level VR solution. I have one, and I love it. As this is a mobile HMD, it has its obvious limitations, and one of those is a decreased field of view. If you’re using one of Samsung’s Galaxy Note phones, that problem is alleviated somewhat by the larger screen. If you happen to be using a Samsung Galaxy Note 7, however, you’ll find that your device will no longer work with Samsung’s headset.

Oculus and Samsung have decided to pull Note 7 support for the new Gear VR model because, you know, it has a bit of an exploding and melting problem. Reports have been flooding in for weeks of Galaxy Note 7s overheating, melting, and combusting. Oculus figures it probably wouldn’t be good if this happened while the phone was inches away from your eyeballs. If you plug in a Note 7 to a Gear VR you now get the following message:

“Customer safety is Oculus’ top priority. Oculus is removing support for all Note 7 devices on the Oculus platform. Until further notice, Note 7 devices will not be compatible with the Gear VR.” Samsung will undoubtedly be enacting a recall very soon, so hopefully you’ll get a new phone out of it that you can use with the Gear VR.
