Half-Life Fans Plan An Uncommonly Civil Protest

Half-Life Fans Plan An Uncommonly Civil Protest

None

Gamers aren’t exactly known for their well-reasoned and courteous arguments, but a Steam group calling themselves A Call for Communication is trying to induce a response from Valve without using the racism, sexism or petulance that gamers are typically known for.

CFC is hosting an event called “A Red Letter Day” where they’re asking fans of the Half-Life series to play Half-Life 2 this weekend at 2:00 P.M. Eastern, 11 A.M. Pacific. The group hopes that Valve will take notice and divulge a bit of info regarding Half-Life 3.

“The lack of communication between Valve and the Half-Life community has been a frustrating experience,” reads the group’s official homepage. “While continued support for current and future products is greatly appreciated, fans of the Half-Life series have waited years for a word on when the franchise will return. So, Instead of focusing efforts in a negative and disrespectful way, we have decided to gain Valve’s attention by delivering a basic message: Your oldest and longest running fanbase would like better communication.”

As surprised as I am by the civility of this group, I highly doubt that Valve is going to take notice and suddenly draft a press release. Half-Life 3 will be a gigantic game (if it’s ever released) regardless of whether or not Valve decides to communicate with their fans. And while I would love to pretend that Valve owes us an explanation for their lack of communication, they don’t, and anyone who thinks otherwise has an overinflated sense of self-importance.

Either way, I really hope that CFC can maintain their well-mannered behavior throughout their protest. At the very least, it’s a step in the right direction for the reputation of gamers.
