I Am Setsuna Set for a Mid-July Release

I Am Setsuna Set for a Mid-July Release

If you’re like me, sometimes you just crave a good, long, story-driven, classic JRPG. No fancy real-time battle systems or hyper-realistic character models; just a party of adventurers engaging in an epic quest that plays out with plenty of melodrama and a lot of turn-based battles along the way. Square Enix is no stranger to the JRPG formula, and its upcoming, old-school offering I Am Setsuna checks all of those boxes. The game has kind of a Grandia II vibe as you follow Endir, a skilled mercenary who is given the task of escorting the mysterious and powerful Setsuna on her journey of sacrifice.

The game was developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, a new studio within Square Enix that specializes in the kind of old-school games I described above. We learned today that I Am Setsuna will be available in North America, on PlayStation 4 and Steam, on July 19. The game is already out in Japan where it received generally favorable reviews from the likes of Famitsu. We can expect a 20-25 hour campaign and interesting, Chrono-Trigger -inspired combat, but reviewers also had gripes with frequent loading breaks in towns and a lack of innovation. If you’ve been looking forward to this game, though, I imagine a lack of innovation might as well be a selling feature. If that’s you, the wait is almost over.
