Japan’s Vita Sales Are Increasingly Disappointing

Japan’s Vita Sales Are Increasingly Disappointing

None

Sony’s recently released PlayStation Vita seemed like it was going to hit the ground running in Japan, but sales have slowed down to a crawl over the past few weeks. So far, roughly 500,000 units have been sold, but the vast majority of those were shipped within the first 7 days, and last week Sony only sold 18,361 units.

However, it’s important to mention that pretty much every piece of gaming hardware has had a pretty significant drop in sales over the past few weeks. Sales of Nintendo’s 3DS, which had been growing in popularity for months, were cut in half last week. However, they still managed to ship around 100,000 systems.

The most disappointing numbers, by my estimation, came from the comparison between the Vita and Sony’s aging PlayStation Portable. 22,538 PSPs were sold last week, which must feel like a punch to the gut for Sony.

However, the PlayStation Vita is heading to the U.S. in a few weeks, so we’ll start to get a better idea about how the system is going to perform once those numbers start to roll in. Hopefully we don’t have a repeat of the PSP’s lackluster performance.
