Kaz Hirai Steps Down As SCE Chairman

None

Kazuo Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Corporation and chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, is going to be stepping down from one of those roles. The position of SCE Chairman will instead be taken up by Andrew House. Kaz will still be involved in SCE operations, but only in a part-time fashion. This information comes directly from a Sony executive appointments briefing.

This probably explains why Kaz did not come up on stage during the E3 Sony press conference, and why Jack Tretton was so specific about wanting to thank Kaz at the beginning of the conference.

Kaz joined Sony Computer Entertainment in August of 1995, and he played an instrumental role in the success of the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2. Without Kaz we probably wouldn’t have the powerful PSN or the Sony “ecosystem” that we have today. We also wouldn’t have ever had the $599 U.S. dollars or “Riiiiiiiiidge Racer!!!” memes.

Kaz was a great business man and was always good for a laugh. Let’s hope that his successor, Mr. House, will provide us with similarly awesome products and memorable moments.
