Mario Jumps Into 3D This Year

Mario Jumps Into 3D This Year

None

Despite his enduring status as Nintendo’s corpulent mascot, Mario has been conspicuously absent for three out of four of Nintendo’s last system launches. Though the 3DS was brought out without a Mario title in sight, that gap was filled this morning at the company’s E3 press conference with the reveal of Super Mario 3D, for the Nintendo 3DS.

In a brief gameplay trailer, Mario was shown navigating his way through three-dimensional platforming levels, some of them harking back to classic stages, as he stomped Goombas and smashed Koopas with reckless abandon. The perspective appears to be fixed, relying on the system’s glasses-free 3D effect to help one gauge depth during its fully-3D platforming segments.

Super Mario 3D will be released on the Nintendo 3DS by the end of this year.
