Mario Kart DS is a 2005 kart racing game, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo. The game was released exclusively on the Nintendo DS, becoming the fifth mainline entry in the long-running franchise. At the time, it was the first Mario Kart title that gamers could play online, a feature which brought acclaim from fans and critics alike. After Mario Kart: Super Circuit on the Game Boy Advance, Mario Kart DS was also the second game in the series on a portable device.
Mario Kart DS Premise
If you’ve played any Mario Kart game in the past, you know what to expect when it comes to Mario Kart DS. You choose a character from the Mario series and pit them in a kart race against seven other Super Mario characters. This is done in single races or in a series of tournaments that place on tracks based on locations from across the Super Mario games.
The races themselves are absolute chaos, due to the item boxes that you’re able to pick up. These boxes provide one of many different power-ups, which can either be a boost for yourself, or a weapon to use against your enemies. While there’s an obvious element of luck in play here, great Mario Kart DS players can use strategy to ensure they make the most of every single power-up to win the races.
The game makes great use of the Nintendo DS’ two screens, with the top used for the race itself, and the bottom used to show a bird’s-eye view of the map and the current standings. This adds an extra layer of complexity to Mario Kart DS, as it could make you rethink your overall strategy as you move through the circuit.
Mario Kart DS Main Characters
The Mario Kart games are a celebration of Mario as a whole, bringing together all of the classic characters into one chaotic package. You can control all of them in-gam and they have unique karts tailored specifically to themselves. Each one has different benefits and negatives, so it’s up to you to decide what is most important on the circuit. If you were wondering exactly who is in on the action, here’s the full list of playable characters in Mario Kart DS:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Peach
- Yoshi
- Toad
- Donkey Kong
- Wario
- Bowser
- Dry Bones
- Daisy
- Waluigi
- R.O.B.
- Shy Guy
Mario Kart DS Titles in the Series
Over the years, the Mario Kart series has become a staple among casual gamers as the perfect party game. It’s the perfect mix of competitive and fun, bringing gamers together in a way that other games fail to achieve. Although it’s been a few years now since a mainline game was released in the franchise, it’s nothing for gamers to worry about. Traditionally, there’s always been a wait between major releases, so the current draught is nothing out of the ordinary. No doubt, a new Mario Kart title will be on the way sometime in the future.

Mario Kart DS Cheat Codes
Unfortunately, Mario Kart DS doesn’t feature any official cheat codes to enter for any unique unlocks or advantages. Instead, it takes the same approach as many other Nintendo DS titles, allowing gamers to use a third-party Active Replay cartridge to activate cheats. We’ve put together this list of cheat codes for Mario Kart DS that you’re able to use while using an Action Replay.

Mario Kart DS Cheat Code FAQs
Do These Mario Kart DS Cheat Codes Work On An Emulator?
They should, yes! If you’re using an emulator such as DeSmuME to play Mario Kart DS on your PC, then you should be able to enter these cheats. Exactly how you do this depends entirely on the emulator that you’re using, as each one has its own way to enter cheat codes.
How Do I Unlock All Characters in Mario Kart DS?
You can simply use the cheat code above to unlock them all, however, if you’re wanting to get them properly, you’ll have to complete certain challenges to unlock them. There are four unlockable characters in the game, Dry Bones, Daisy, Waluigi, and R.O.B., but you can play the game legitimately to unlock them. Here’s what you must do for each:
- Dry Bones: Receive a gold trophy in the 50cc Special Cup.
- Daisy: Receive a gold trophy in the 50cc Lightning Cup
- Waluigi: Receive a gold trophy in the 100cc Lightning Cup
- R.O.B.: Receive a gold trophy in the Mirror Mode Special Cup
How Do I Unlock All 36 Karts in Mario Kart DS?
As with the characters, the same cheat code unlocks all 36 karts in the game. Each character has extra unlockable karts, which you can secure by winning all cups in the 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and Mirror engine classes if you wanted to do it properly.
