The Marvel Lego games are a great way for adults and kids alike to bond in cooperative gameplay centering around superheroes. It’s a lot of fun and there’s an undeniable playfulness to these games. This playfulness is why the Netflix-produced Marvel shows won’t be included in the games. Despite their canonical connection to Marvel’s cinematic universe, they’re simply too dark.
Addressing Daredevil specifically, assistant game director, Stephen Sharples stated that “It’s just a step too far for us to take that man in the black mask, Daredevil, who is hanging people off buildings and things like that. It’s just a step too far for a Lego game.”
His point is well taken, and it’s easy to see where he’s coming from. It’s slightly comical that he references a man in a black mask who hangs people off buildings, though. That exact description could also be fairly applied to Batman, a character who has been in multiple Lego titles.
This isn’t to say, of course, that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage won’t make appearances in the game. Stephen Sharples just thinks it’s best to stick to the more classic, comic book versions of those characters instead of the gritty, mature versions we see on Netflix. It’s hard to imagine that being a deal breaker for fans of the game, though.
Lego Marvel’s Avengers is set to release on January 26, 2016 in the US.
