Microsoft And Sony Are Very Into Free-To-Play Games

Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein says that both Microsoft and Sony are investing heavily into the free-to-play and in-app models with their next-gen consoles.

“The next-gen consoles are going to be fully embracing the free-to-play and these iAP-type business models,” Rein said while speaking at the UK’s Game Horizon conference. “So in case you don’t know that I’m putting that out there. Sony and Microsoft are both going heavily in that area.”

When asked by GamesIndustry International’s Matt Martin for evidence, Rein responded with “Well, I’m telling you. I’m telling you what they’re telling developers.”

The rise of free-to-play can be attributed to both the rise of mobile gaming and select PC titles such as Riot Games’ League of Legends, which boasts over 12 million daily players.
